Sep, mi' AN EXCELLENT BOOK The Dominion Bureau of Statistics, under authority of Hon. H. H. Stevens,, minister of trade and commerce, has published the Canada Year Book for 1933, an excellent publication full from cover to cover with information about this wonderful country in yhich we live. There if hardly any phase of Canadian life, activity or natural wealth that is not dealt vith. As an up-to-the-ininute encyclopedia of information about Canada, the baok is extremely valuable. PRINCE RUPERT AND THE MAP In the beginning of 'the Canada Year Book is a map prepared by the National Development Bureau of the Department of the Interior which shows Prince Rupert prominently and gives the distance from Prince Rupert to Yokohama as 3S15 miles. The distance from Vancouver to Yokohama is shown as 4280 miles, a difference of 465 miles. This makes it very clear to all the world what a strategic position Prince Rupert holds in regard to world markets. Judging from indications, it seems likely that advantage may be taken of this position during the present crop year to ship considerable .grain through the port THE CONSOLIDATED MINING & SMELTING COMPAjW OF CANADA, LIMITED - TXAIL 4tXITIB COLTMBU ELEPHANT ' Braad C1IC.MICAL ICKriUZER Hoauctn Rt-teet of TADANA Brsnd riECTROLlTir AMMOMCM PHOSPHATE SCLMUTE OF AMMQXLV. , TRIPLE SUPERPHOSPHATE LEAD-zrSv CAnMim-BisMimi TOTFH TTHRfrrn J P&relin cow wea ten rroriu aa tht laying toee, and there will alwaje be doubting Thomaaea to whom dm- . B.C. The Letter Box AS UNEMPLOYED VIEW Editor. Dally News: The attitude of the unemployed towards the recent order to work for their relief wlU inavoldably give rise to criticism from those more fortunately fHuated. May I state my case wrrfcto is probably typical of many nserapeoyed? Wage I have earned during the past two years have served to relieve me from relief for brief periods. It was hardly believable that labor would be demanded without equipping the laborer We always filled our horses bellies on the"pfaWe before we worked thero. Is it unreasonable I am loathe to ! riak my remaining garments? Or should the chance of spending three years on Doukhobor Island be accepted as possibly the best way out of the difficult times ahead? Reasonable citizens of Prince Rupert should mark well this clumsy move of the government. Exasperated as the unemployed are by their privations and deprivations in the midst of plenty the time Is hardly opportune for arbitrary and ill-considered dictations from officials. The stand I am taking has nothing to do with my willingness to earn m9 bread. I ahallenee him who would challenge this to otter any-! thing that wW turn a few dollars in my direction. J. Dally News: I notice that in your issue of September 3 you state that I am contesting the forthcoming election as a Conservative candidate. I wish io inform you that you have been either misinformed or misunderstand the Issue as far as I am concerned, in the approaching contest. It Is a fact, that two years ago I was nomlriated as the Conservative candidate In Skeena riding. Since then, the executive of the B'. 6. Conservative Association decided that the Conservatives of B. C. would not, as an organization, take any part as a body In the forthcoming election. I was therefore, automatically released as the Conservative candidate and am now at liberty, If I decide, to enter the contest, to support those principles which I consider will be In the best interests of the provinces In' general and the Skeena riding in particular.
