Saturday. Jab- 99, THE CAVALCADE The talking picture now rurmiug at the Capitol Theatre if the most talked about event of the week m the city. ; Many hundreds have been to see it and many hundreds; rafcre will vfefc the theatre this evening to see and hear, j This American prodtieed and dkcted picture English in its conception and English in its players but its theme and appeal is universal A few people find difficulty in following the dialect of the educated and cultured EngKsh-man but k so portrays the spirit of the British nation that all who see it become thrilled with its dramatic power, ha broad humanity and fte true interpretation of the facts and foibles of life. MR. ROLSTONS CANDIDATURE Objection has been taken to the method tinder which H. W. JL Rolston has become a candidate for the consti-' ttiency of Atlin. He has come out as an independent and as such is appealing to the people. . Of course there may be other independents in the field. The Liberal nominee is about as independent a person as can be conceived. The only feature of his candidacy is that he has associated himself with advance policies and with T. D. PattuRo as leader. If Mr. Rokton had been regularly nominated by a party he wetrtd no longer be classed as an independent. In the event of being elected, he might, if he chose,, ally himself with any -party and then he would no longer be an independent Other independent groups may choose other independent candidates ad infinitum. That does not affect Mr. Rolston's position. The independents cannot be controlled by any convention or group. If they do. they lose their political independence. The difficulty in regard to the independent is that no oq knows what he wiH de next He is pledged to nothing and has no policy that he can hope to carry because he has no' one with him. If elected he goes to Victoria like a lost sheep without a shepherd. Even if he has a good policy, he becomes only a voice, crying in the wilderness. He cannot get anywhere. Mr. Eolston, as a Conservative, would have been a strong candidate. He has espoused the Conservative cause in the past with much vigor and, doubtless, he still will try to carry out conservative policies unless he has been converted to some other policy. In the meantime he has no exclusive ctetm to the word Independent" if one or more other candidates w ish to enter the field.
