The Conservative party is looking for a leader in British Columbia and there has been elected to the Legislature a rather outstanding Conservative in the person of Herbert Anscombe, ex-mayor of Victoria and former reeve of Oak Bay. He is a businessman with personality and much will depend on his work in the Legislature during the next year as to whether he will be the new leader of the party or not. Leaders are developed, not chosen. By what some people- might consider a trick of fate, Air. Anscombe was elected to the Legislature. Others claim that he was elected in spite of strong forces against him and that he is big enough and clever enough to take the place that is open to him in the new House. Anscombe was elected as an independent and he is likely to show his independence by supporting the Pattullo government on important measures that he considers may be beneficial to the province. He will also oppose if he sees fit, but he will not oppose just for the sake of opposition as has been the custom in the past. Out of the throes of a big conflict in which one of the big political parties has almost been submerged has arisen a new idea in politics. Pattullo is a new kind of premier with a new policy and the Conservatives it is expected will arise with a new idea of what government means. Possibly Anscombe will be the man who will pull his party from the morass in which the late administration almost buried them. If he does so it will be by showing a hew way in opposition, just as Pattullo will show a new way in ad ministration. With Pattullo at the head and with Connell and Anscombe leading different sections of the opposition and With McGeer if voice crying in the wilderness, the , next few sessions of the Legislature should prov e notable. Nobody can tell just what may happen. SALVATION ARMY APPEAL The Salvation Army is appealing once more to the people of Prince Rupert on behalf of the unfortunate people of the city who need a friend at Christmastide. They are asking for money and goods with which to furnish Christmas hampers. Particularly is their appeal addressed on behalf of the children, whose parents are unable to provide them with those things which naturally go with the festive season. For a number of years the Daily News has collaborated with the Salvation Army in making these collections and we again ask for contributions just as large if not larger than ever. The money is needed. We are assured of that. People are generously inclined. We know from past experience. Let Uri do oilr bit once more and help where help is needed. Hanson.
