INCREASED TAXES Last week the provincial minister of finance announced . that the taxes would be increased. Yesterday the federal . minister announced that the little sum of seventy million dollars niore than the previous year would be extracted from the pockets of the ten million people who inhabit this country. It means seven dollars each for every man, woman and child in the country and the people with children will pay more than their share because the children consume as much sugar and other taxable commodities as grownups. In a family of six the tax would be approximately $42 a year more than formerly. To levy that much extra taxes when the average earning power of every community has dropped ten to fifty nercent is a terrible blow. The hardest tax is that upon investors in companies, and it is probable that m many cases companies will be dis solved and a return be mat.c taprivate control. Incorpora ted companies have to pay twelve and a half percent on ; . - i i :if ii - i:..s.i l l ine income earned ami n mere is u uivmeim uic suuie-holders have to pay again on the same money from three percent up, according to the amount of their income. HARDSHIPS ON FAMILIES Is it any wonder that people refuse to have families. Doctors' fees for mothers are so high that it h impossible for many to pay in these difficult times. Living costs are -being increased through taxes levied upon food. Hospital 4fees are high. Everything is loaded against the person with a family. Governments conspire; with others to make family life difficult Now it is being proposed in some Quarters-to do away with what are known as social ser vices, which are in many cases services designed to assist those who raise families. TAX ON SUGAR The most recent levy of the government announced yesterday is one that will hit every f amiy. Sugar is to be taxed two cents a pound, in addition to the six percent sales tax and the increased income tax on the people who manu .facture it. All this will be added to the consumer, the wo- 4tnen and children as well as the men Two cents a pound on sugar is an impost that made the dealers gasp when they heard of it. OPTIMISTIC NOTE One optimistic note in the budget was that Empire trade was increasing There was a drop of a quarter of a billion dollars in all foreign trade in eleven months but there was recently an improvement of Empire trade which was- increasing. The country was now the fifth trading country in the world Mr. Rhodes said. He did not say to what extent Empire trade was making up for the decline with other countries but at any rate it is improving. That is something to be thankful for. These two great men. recently graduated from the Seal Cove Dental College, where they spedalbwd m bridge-work, have succeeded In inventing a bridge whleh win east no more than one hundred dollars. The bridge operates on the principle that like charges repel, and unKke charges attract. Now every body knows that when ebonite Is rubbed with cats' fur. a charge of electricity is produced In the ebon ite. This process is produced In the power house Three or four eats are placed in a circular troagh. and a mouse is thrown In with them.
