TOUGH ON CODFISH Scientist Makes Buttons and Piano Keys From Fish HALIFAX, April 26: (CP) Life may be a tough proposition for the codfish In a few years. Sought now for its edible qualities, its flesh will be fa increased demand as the basic material In the manufacture of a thousand and one articles if experiments under way here are successful. Piano keys, radio knobs, buttons and umbrella handles are only a tew of the articles which can be made from a substance which has been produced from ordinary fish meal at the Fisheries Experimental Station by a process which It is hoped to bring down to a commercial basts within the year. This partial success has been met by Dr W. W. Johnston, who has been able to produce an artificial horn from fish muscle which closely resembles the material now used In the production of many articles of everyday use. Strewn arqund the laboratory where the young scientist has been working for five months are little lumps of a hard, translucent substance with a yellowish or dark brown tinge. Some of them have been produced from cod, others from hake, pollock, cusk and skate. Even Dog Fish Even the hated dog fish, bane of the fishermen because of his destructive tendencies, appears likely to lead a more useful lite In future if the experiments are successful. Although Or. Johnston has not as yet been able to produce a good quality product from its flesh, he is hopeful that further research will develop a satisfactory material. The other fish have yielded up an excellent product through a pro cess as simple as It is Ingenious. It consists In combining ordinary fish muscle meal with a nl&stlcbitaa agent :ahd subjecting the resultant mixture1 oa moderate temperature ana nign pressure From 3ne!proeps emerges a whlcrr will be available for many purposes if its manufacture van be made commercially feasible t Win this, in sight, pr. Johnston is ' now concentrating on the problem f cuttine down the cost of nt the new material. If he can succeed In bringing It -town sufficiently low. great Industrial possibilities are seen for the discovery. In the United States alone, a market of 90000 tons annually exists for the nroduet from which buttons are now made. and it commands a price of 83 cents per vwnd. So it may be that before manv years Nova Scotia's fishermen will have found another market to bolster un the present small demanr for their catch and Nova Scotia will be the location of a new and grow ing industry. There la no real money madr out of writing books and It should n't be expected. ' Hendrick Van Loon.
