Jan. Si. 1983 RAILWAY SITUATION There seems to be some doubt as to what action will be takgn by the federal government in regard to the railways. The commission which was appointed to make recommendations reported against amalgamation of the two big companies but favored compulsory co-operation. Since that a number of representations have been made in favor of complete amalgamation or amalgamation for a term of years. The latter we do not like. It would probably mean that Prince Rupert would remain a C. N. R. town with the railway operated by the C. P. R. under such conditions we. could not expect much progress. What we shoilld-roueh prefer is, if there is to be amalgamation, that it be complete and conclusive without any "if" or '"but, It woud be better to remain as we are than to find ourselves "betwixt two stools," neither one or the other. LEAGUE DIFFICULTIES The League of Nations finds itself in a difficult position with Japan openly defiant and other pations sceptical or critical. It started out with a wonderful ideal but it seems to have failed to understand the primitivene of human nature. It was apt so many years ago that Britain was Ukipg possession of weaker foreign countries where there wexe disorders, spanking them soundly and then taking (barge of their affairs and showing how government was conducted in a British country. Today Japan is doing the same, not from alt uitie rrotives but to smire bush ess and power and prestige. S.. Britain did. Then it was found that neither the busine.--. iwwer or prestige was worth the price oaid so Bvir.-vn joined in with the other powerful nations to form a -'.-ague which would prevent the exrwnse, danger and suffering caused by the use of force. Japan will soon come to a realization of the futility of fihtinjr the v.orid and will fall in line with the other nations but in the meantime she seems to be resolved to make Man-"hinrja a part of her empire. iki - ..)
