Feb. 17: TO save the general public another sermon "on the dreary subject of hell." Canon Allan P. Shatford, rector of the Church of St. James the Apostle and well known Anglican cleric, has made "a final statement on hell" m the news columns of the Montreal Star. Canon Shatford bases his article on five points. No Catholic universal i creed has given a place to the dayma, of everlasting punishment. ,The ecumenical (world-wide) coun cils of the church never promulgated a dogma on the subject of hell. The fathers of the church were certainly never unanimous In their support of the dogma of everlasting damnation. The revisors of the New Testament in 1880 removed the words "Hell." "Everlasting," and "damnation" from the scriptures. Lastly, the Church of England has no official doctrine of everlasting punishment. I These points are the basis for I Canon Shat ford's contention that the doctrine of a "ftre-and-brim-stone" hell is obsolete; that no sin is great enough to warrant everlasting damnation Ms contention SPECIALS I i Which will convince you that you ! can save money in buying from us Brunswick Sardines per tin Nabob Tomato Ketch upper pint bottle Helmet Corned Beet 2 tins Pure Strawberry Jaiivr-jvell Qp I known make, 4 -lb tin Picnie Hams 1 1 n Soda ZftacaltsS Sis per-f. "All I, am claiming is my own right, and the equal right, of any Anglican, to refuse the dogma as binding upon the conscience. To Father Smeaton's offer of Purgatory as a relief from Uie horrors of hell I may be permitted to say without discourtesy that we have our own' doctrine of the intermediate state. "I am making my protest solely against hell as a place of everlasting torment. I believe ' in punlsh- Iment for sins, both here and here after, but the punishment must be corrective and remedial, not vindictive and hopeless." Canon Shatford said.
