PBOiT OP nt orpicR I .V CONCERT IS ENJOYABLE Easier Cantata Featured Final Private Ilrcltal of Philharmonic Society Eastertide music, Maunder Inspiring cantata "Olivet to Calvary," featured the program presented last evening by the local Philharmonic Society in the United Church to an appreciative audience of associate members and friends. This was the last private Concert to be given by the organization for the 1932-1933 season. H. N. Brocklesby again conducted, assisted in some numbers by C. P. Balagno. The cantata, which depicts scenes In the last days of Christ on earth, is a particularly difficult piece of work for an amateur organization to attempt and requires not only much effort from the singers but also a considerable degree of interpretative skill from the conductor. Both these were fully apparent last night, the members responding with precision to the forceful yet reverent conducting, this being most noticeable, perhaps, Jn the number "March to Calvary." Mrs. R. O. Large, as soprano soloist, was very effective In "Another Temple." J. E. Davey and Dr. R. O. Large sang the tenor and baritone solos re- spectively. "Lullaby of Life Leslie, i. conducted by "C. P. Balagno. opened the program. This was a delightful number with full tonal effects, ad- mirably handled by both conductor and choir, followed by a trio consisting of Mrs. R. G. Large. Mrs H N. Brocklesby and Mrs. A. J Web-i ber. Miss Ruth Nelson, a promising young pianist, played Von Weber's '"Rondo Brilllante" with a delicate though confident touch and. on be-jlng encored, executed the sparkling third movement of Bach's Italian Concerto The unaccompanied singing of Bantock's "Faery Song." the welcoming chant of the Fairy people !to two young lovers Into the Oaelic paradise as beautiful in the stark Simplicity-its? arrangement and lh f - I f I ' 1 J 1- vne tuMc iccuug ui.iue wuik. was admirably sensed and presented by Qonauctor -ana cnotr. sir Edward Elgar, the contemporary English composer, also figured In the program in "Death on the Hills." A Russian poem, set to music by this most brilliant of present day com posers, this piece calls for some particularly careful Interpretive work from the conductor and this it received adequately, the manner in which the bass obligate and the alternating creseendos and diminuendos of the female voices was taken being excellent. Presentation Made During an Interval in the Dro- 8 ram. Dr. R. O. Large, president of the society, presented little Miss Marie Balagno with a fountain Den from the society as a token of ap preciation for her help as accompanist at rehearsals while Mr. Ba lagno aeted as conductor during the recent illness of Mr. Brocklesby. The concert will be reoeated to night in the same church for the benefit of the unemployed.
