It seems that Skipper William Bussey and his crew of three men had their skates of gear out on the banks not far from North Island when a huge sea lion began to teed on the halibut, tak- ing them from the hooks at a safe j distance liom the boat. He would! come up with the halibut in his mouth, snap it in two and swallow 1 one of the pieces, then d lying rap-1 idly would get the other piece before it gi far below the surface and when the skipper suddenly shouted "The sea lion's beaded for the boat." Bert Shepherd, one of the fishermen, haMfned below for his shotgun, inserted the only shell at hand and, whin the big beast rose up about five yards from the boat, fired and hit it in the neck, close to the head. Blood spurted from the wound and for fifteen minutes the creature flopped around, lashing the water until the whole sea was red with i blood. Once more the Uon headed for i the boat and the skipper shottted: I "Here he is again and he may come ; on board The reply of one of the men was "If he does well take to the masts As he got alongside be ' raised up for the last time, spouted blood and then with a final roar 1 slowly gave up and sank beneath the surface, leaving only the bloody water to mark the spot GEMS FROM LIFE'S iSCKAP-BOOK "He who MORALE his THaM-aervanea. frightens away nfef esmshiDe warsns not only Um( heart of the owner. bt all who some in contact with It.
