So far he has secured the support of the western premiers and the co-operation of Premier Bennett in securing facilities lor laying his plans before the other iiremiew at a conference at Ottawa. PUINCE RUPERT'S PROBLEM Prince Rupert's problem is closely bound up with the success of the conference and the sympathetic consideration given the proposals by the federal administration. If a "work and wages" program is adopted the northern transprovincial highway from Prince Rupert to Jasper will undoubtedly be included in the nublic works nlans I 1 e. 1 v j wnicn are Demg advanced, n uns can be carried out as a federal project or a provincial project financed or assisted by Ottawa, it is pretty well assured that real work will be done on it and that it will be carried through to completion within a reasonable period. WAS ONCE GOVERNOR Former Chief Kxecutive of Missouri, Frederick Gardner, Passes ST. LOUIS. Dec. 27: -Frederick Dosier Oardner. former governor of Missouri, is dead here at the age of 61 years. A Democrat, he was chief executive of the state from 191? to 1921 Born at Hickman. Ky.. November 6. 1866. Oardner r wived his education In Kentucky and Tennessee and removed to St. Loais at the age of 17. entering the employ of the St. Louis Coffin Oo. of which bust-n. for many years later he was sole owner. He was a member of the Board of Freeholders of St Louis in 1913-15 and assisted in drafting the charter of St. Louis. He was married in la4 to Jeanette Vos-burgh of St. Louis. Karly in the present century Dr. Stewart was appointed Professor of Medicine at Dalnousie University Mistical College and on his return from overseas in l&lfl, he became the first dean of the medical faculty of that Institution. In 1915 Dalnousie University received permission to organise No. 7 Stationary Hospital for service overseas and Dr. Stewart was unanimously chosen to command It, The unit reached Prance early in 1916 and remained there until the end of the war. Dr. Stewart remaining In command until March, 1018, when he was appointed to headquarters of the Canadian Army Medical Corps as consulting surgeon. He returned to Canada on January G, 1019. He had also received the honorary degree of LLD. from both McOlll University. Montreal, and Dal-hoasle University, Halifax. For his military services he was made a Commander of the British Empire and he retired from the army with the rank of colonel. Colonel Stewart's was a tall, commanding figure with pronounced military bearing.
