This is an example of one of the biggest possible plums of the whal- ing venture on these coasts, and well repays the whalers for their really arduous toil. _ Ambergris sells in Europe at nearly $20 an ounce of find and the reason for its great Explaining the mature the value, the Manager from the Rose Harbor Whaling station rermarks that it is only from the sperm whale that the stuff is ever obtained Ambergris is a morbid secretion of the nature of an abscess, which clots and hardens in the intestines of the whale. It is believed that the formation is caused by the presence in the whale’s stomach of parts of the bodies of cuttle fish which the whale devours. Sperm whales are fonder of cuttle fish that the average boy’s best girl is of candy, and cuttle fish, like candy, doesn’t always agree with “The Hotel Jonah" of Sir Sperm Whale. The ambergris is occasionally treated like the prophet by the whale, and thus sometimes found floating on the sea, or cast on shore. The reason for its is immense value is the fact that while almost odorless itself, am- bergris possesses the peculiar facul- ty of being able to intensify perfumes and is largely used by the Parisian perfumers. It is| not at all frequently found, and is valuable accordingly. The sperm whale from which the latest supply has been obtained so fortunately, is only the fourth of the species ever landed at Rose Harbor.
