Thousands df vol-timns of newspaper articles will be written about her this weelc and most of them will be .appreciative. No one suspected when the young girl, Annie Wood, married the vicar of Sibsey that the bride would become a world figure. Everything was -against it with the excep-, tion of her parentage, which was English on one side and1 Irish on the other. Apparently she set out to undertake j the duties of motherhood and parson's wife with excellent intentions, but there was something stirring within her that rebelled against it. She disagreed with her husband and the tenets that he preached and, going to the opposite extreme, joined the society of free-thinkers, allied herself! with Uradlaugh in his crusade against all established forms of religion and became for the time being the most notorious woman in England. That was simply a phase of her development While she abjured the established Christian religion she soon began to be interested in Christian work such as children's aid. In India she took up the cause of education and when the college which she founded in Benares was absorbed by the Hindu University she was honored by being given the nonorary degree oi Doctor oi Letters. Annie Besant advocated dominion status for Indja, quarrelled with Gandhi, studied Hindu nhilosoDhv and finally became a Theosophist She took two young boys under her care and educated and trained the elder to be-i come the vehicle for the reincarnation of the new Messiah j and named him Krishnamurti. Failure seemed to have fol-i lowed this effort for Krishnumurti not many years ago ; stated that he did not agree with his adopted mother's views.
