President, Office Bearers and Executive Committee ' Appointed at Meeting Society Explained Prince Rupert’s own branch ofthe R. S. P. C. A. has been established in renewed activity. At the meeting court room held last night, the Mayor presided, and was elected Honorary President. Dr. Reddie was elected president, and W. H. Vickers vice president. Mr. Neil McKay, occupies the position of secretary, and an executive com- mittee consisting of the following members was appointed: Messrs. W. E. Fisher, M. Wells, Captain Hamar, Frank Kelly W. W. Law- son, C. C. Perry and J. S. Dade. Protection Not Prosecution Mr, H, A. Robinson, inspector of the Society for the whole Province;-4vas-present and spoke ofthe objects of the organisation. The idea is chiefly to protect the dumb animals, rather’ than to convict persons guilty of cruelty to them. Mr. Robinson sug- gested that a prize might be in the police Last Night—Objects of by H. A. Robinson offered at school for essays re- lating to kindness to animals to instil the principles of the society into the children’s minds. Choose Advisory Board advisory board on, the lines of the Vancouver organisation, and the rules and constitution of the Vancouver society branch will ap- ply to Prince Rupert for the most part. All members of the society are invested with powers as peace officers, and all constables of the city polcie force are similarly peace officers for the purposes of the society. by virtue of their office. Next Wednesday the committee will meet. to attend to the rest of the details of organisation, and a general meeting of the society will be held on the third Tuesday of each month. Last night’s at- tendance was a very good one all things considered. a BUILDING BIG NEW STEAMER Ramona is Back on Seattle, Rupert and Alaska Run, but is Too Small for Increasing Traffic. Today the well known Pacific Coas Company S.S. Ramona is discharging mixed frieght at the wharf including a latge number of lengths of sewer pipe. The Ramona is quite a popular boat, and in the early Rupert days did a brisk business. She is still doing as much as her accom- modation can comfortably under- take, and is no mean steamer, but the rapid increase in the pas- senger traffic to Alaska is so great that the company have now made arrangements to build a powerful new steamer specially for this run. The name of the boat has not yet’ been fixed, but it is known that she wll be a State of Cal fornia, and equipped in the finest modern style for The comfort, speed and safety. S.S. Delhi is taking a sha e of the large as the ENDED IN SMOKE But was Very Nearly a Nasty Accident. Case of Powder and Steel. Steel was used very riskily by a powderman in the employ of Messrs. McInnis and Kelly yes- terday with the result that about one and a half boxes of dynamite went off prematurely in the shot hole, and the reckless powderman was very nearly wiped off the face of the earth. He had the most extraordinary luck, however, for though smothered with smoke, dazed with the shock, and spat- tered with small stones and gravil, a drink of brandy neat, was able to get back to work again. Mr. McInnis by good fortune, too, had just taken the gang of men off the neighborhood of the sho’ hole, to alter track some distance away. He severely rep- remanded the powderman who was as black as the ac of spades and smelt as sulphurous as the Earl of well, you know where. well that ends All’s Ramona’s work now but is|well, especially if it’s a case of keeping the outside route not|}monkeying with powder. But the Hays Creek dam was _ reached without mishap, and here the party again imbibed freely. Al- derman Douglas seemed — likely to drink in the whole municipal water supply, but just when the Mayor was about to interfere in the interests of the citizens, the thirsty alderman raised his head and the water leve! in the dam ceased to sink. Visited Pumping Station With a visit to the pumping station the trip concluded. On the way there along the pipe line, just at the point where the bush trail gives place to a certain plank pathway, Alderman Doug- las mysteriously disappeared. Half way to the pumping station he was missed by the Mayor, and the hue and cry was at once clad raised to discover him. Shouts loud and long at length re- sulted in a far heard haloo in the familiar Douglas accent, from the deepest recesses of the bush. | Presently the indefatigable alder- man appeared and in answer to the earnest enquiries of the Mayor, lexplained for the benefit of press and public that he had kept to the line of the creek for coolness’ sake, and had not gone out into |the open where the afternoon sun broiled down.
