The Douglas scheme is designed to strike a better balance between producer and purchaser, insuring a much better distribution of goods by assuring that purchasing power equal producing power at all times. Unlike socialism it does hot do away with private initiative but at the same time it protects the mentally and physically weak and is designed to bring about a higher standard of living by putting greater purchasing power in the hands of the mass of the people. One supporter of the scheme in Prince Rupert recently said he had in mind three great economists on a progressive scale. These were Adam Smith, Karl Marx and Major Douglas. Douglas built on the theories of the other two and produced a thoroughly workable scheme. The Douglas scheme is decidedly revolutionary in character. It provides for the shelving of many old ideas. So new and hopeful is it that time must be taken to think it over before -adopting or rejecting it Many ; prominent people in Britain are actively urging it and Australia is said to have taken it tip with great enthusiasm, bomethmp like a dozen books have been. written about it, but very few people in Prince Rupert have even heard about it. Today the1 mind of the people is receptive to new ideas. The avidity with which many turned to the C. C. F. is an indication that they realize something radical must be done. Others have turned to some form of fascism as the cure but feV are satisfied that any of the much touted new schemes would be a great improvement on the old The people are still searching and if Major Douglas has a scheme that will bring relief to a troubled world, it will not be difficult to persuade them to accept it. At any rate it will be interesting to hear about it and to compare it with the other schemes for economic salvation. Half a million people iir -Australia are said to be fully persuaded that he is the mali'of'the hour and that his scheme will be the one that 'Jll'save the world from chaos.
