NEW WATER DISCOVERED Scientists Experimenting With DenlcrlunvOxide or Heavy Water The discovery of a new water heavier than the common water was made two years ago and since that time experiments have shown that, when used, It has the effect of retarding or in some cases preventing growth. Dr. Neal Carter, director of the Prince Rupert Fisheries Experimental Station, told about it at the weekly luncheon of the Ro-tory Club on Thursday. The speaker repeated what all students knew that water was made up of two parts of hydrogen to one part of oxygen. It was made up of molecules and each molecule could be separated Into three atoms. These were composed of protons and electrons, there being a definite number of each. A gallon of ordinary water weighed ten pounds but a gallon of the recently discovered heavy water - denterlum weighed approximately 11.05 pounds. A great many scientists were now experimenting with this new water. It had been found that not only had It a deter rent effect on growth but that It! prevented yeast from fermenting and Its power of dissolving ordinary salt and other substances dif fered from ordinary water. Within the past week or two a small quan tity of the heavy water had been offered for sale for experimental purposes and the price asked was at the rate of $2,240 an ounce.
