November 3, 1934 The Canadian Social Hygiene Council is making, a big bid fo the prevention of the spread of disease and is ask iner for the spending of more money, on preventive mea sures. It points out that, while ill-health costs the people of the Dominion $300,000,000 a year, only $3,000,000 a year is expended on preventive measures. A pamphlet issued by the council says in part: "We are accustomed to being told that this is a machine i age. If people would only learn that their bodies-are mar- vellous flesh-and-blood machines, and would give those machines the same care and attention that expensive machinery receives in an up-fo-date factory, there would be less sickness and lower death-rates." What the writer of this pamphlet misses is the point that man is more than a machine. He is mental or spiritual as well as physical and the mental attitude has a great effect on the physical well being. While it is a good thing to keep the machine in good running order by means of proper food and general living conditions,, it is also, a good thing not to think too much about sickness and its possibility. Some doctors are said to make their patients ill by suggesting possibilities of illness to them.
