Just before leaving Mrs. McLennan told a friend that she had a strange presentiment that something was going to happen with the blasting going on on First avenue near by, and said she wanted to be out of the house when it happened. An- other house which suffered was the residence of Mr. Tom Dunn. Windows shattered both Second avenue and Seventh street frontages. Big plate glass win- dows along Second avenue are in fragments. Newton last night stated that he had given way before strong pres- sure brought to bear on him, and would enter the contest for Federal seat, as an opponent reciprocity. The news came as a bombshell many of Alderman Newton's political friends. The Mayor came charging into the City Hall in an excited condition, and immediately adjourned with several of the aldermen who were at the Hall committee to his the of to for a meeting private room. Some of the more prominent members of the local Conservative party were very outspoken about the matter. The general opinion among them was that the editor- alderman had decided ‘swoop,’ get ahead “pre yspects”” on a bold of the who are | anxious to secure the nomination. As Alderman to other three Newton is not the officjal candidate for the Con- servative party as yet, it is quite possible that the party may prefer io nominate a separate candidate, instead of trailing in Mr. ‘Newton. behind There is a feeling of resentmerr jin the minds of those who think that the latest candidate tried io force the hands of the local Conservatives to further his private th; |é ambitions. (Canadian Press Despatch) London, Aug. 3.—For the first time in the history of the criminal courts of England a skilled analyst has been able to say positively that the stains found on _ the clothes of a prisoner were made by human blood, and not only that, but that the blood was from an anaemic person. In many murder trials the guilt of a prisoner has turned on the evidence of the analyst, who heretofore was un- able to swear positively whether the stains were meade by mam- malian human blood. The point came up in the Crippen case, and it was then said that science was at work on the subject and a successful outcome of the in- vestigation was anticipated. In the case in question a man was charged with killing a woman and when arrested stains were found on his clothes. Dr. Wilcox, the Government analyst, who was a witness in the Crippen case, stated in evidence that modern methods now enabled him to say that the blood was human and or innocence or that it came from an anaemic person, which the victim was. The prisoner was found guilty and sentenced to death. PRINCE ALBERT’S NEW COAST RUN Under Cantiin McKenzie She Will Ply Between Vancouver and Northern B. C. Ports. When the new G. T. P. SSS.
