PULLEN Managing-Editor Member of Audit Bureau' of Circulations Wednesday. June 6, 1934 TWO PAPERS FOR STEWART The town of Stewart is to have two weekly newspapers, according to word received yesterday from the Portland Canal centre. The Stewart News was burned out eighteen months ago and the editor and proprietor, H. W. M. Rol-ston, has been awaiting the improvement in mining conditions before putting in a new plant and continuing publication. Last week the first number of the Northern Argonaut was published by W. R. Smith and W W. Wright and a plant taken north on which to print the paper. Yesterday word came from Stewart stating that Mr. Rolston would recommence publication just as soon as his plant could be assembled. . Of course, Stewart is not big enough for two papers and, evidently, it will be a case of the survival of the fittest there. THOSE OLD PEOPLE The Bible tells about a number of people who were supposed to have lived to a very great age and the incredulous have found this a stumbling block in the way of believing the Biblical records. Moses Cotsworth, general director of the fixed calendar league, London, England, and a former resident of British Columbia, in a leaflet just issued says that from the time of Jacob to the time of Moses the calendar used made a year only half the length-of the present year. When the records say that Jacob was 147 years old it meant that measured by our calendar he would be 731 years old. So the Israelites were said to be 430 years in Egypt but really they were only 215 years there. Moses Cotsworth is one of the foremost mathematicians of the world. He has advocated a calendar giving 13 months of 28 days which would place Sundav on the same day each month and one day in each year to be a holiday without a date. His plan has been approved by the League of Nations and by a good many other authorities. Possibly it may spme uay Decome a universal custom. offices, turned to banking and shipping and made, and lost, a fortune. He dropped $3,000,000 In world war days by building a fleet of wooden steamers to meet the demand for cargo space at sea. The 1906 fire, following the devastating earthquake of that year, served to bring Rolph, then a young banker, to the attention of the entire city for he organized and directed a relief committee that aided thousands of stricken families. . Rolph was married June 25, 1900, to Miss Annie Marshall Reld of San Francisco. Two daughters and a son were born to them.
