Nasmith which strongly opposes the granting of titles to Canadians. He quotes a number of prominent British statesmen who consistently refused to accept titles from the King. After meeting the various arguments in favor of the system he says: i Friday, Feb. 16, 1934 Fundamentally the whole business of honors lends it-j self to trucking and trading, because in the final analysis ' recommendations for honors have to be made by governments, and governments consist of individuals, who are susceptible to influence. It cannot be otherwise. Those who are friendly or powerful with those who are to make the recommendations for honors can bring pressure to bear on behalf of their friends. It is quite obvious, for instance, that were I an influential friend of Mr. Bennett he would probably pay more attention to my opinion than he would to a man of similar qualifications and judgment whom he didn't know at all. ''The award of titles is not going to help Canada to alleviate the tension which already exists between those who have and those who have not.
