The article shows how both the east and the west are penalized through the application of the tariff. It takes as an example the cost of automobiles. Not only do the cars cost more as a result of the high tariff, as seen by comparison of the prices charged on this side of the boundary line and on the other, but the west has to pay heavy freight charges which are superimposed on the cost of the article in the factory. This makes the cost very high to the consumer.
