RECIPROCITY AND THE PANAMA CANAL Reciprocity and the Panama extension of markets. Combined they have a special significance for the people of Prince Rupert. The markets of Eastern Canada and the United States are sep- | arated from the mines and forests of the Pacific Coast by a2 range of | mighty mountains and three thousand miles of land. Man's ingenuity has pierced 2 route through the mountains, but the cost of rail trans- portation prohibits large exchange of products to take place between | the east and the west. The Panama Canal is being built at a cost of hundreds of millions | in order to connect the east with the west by a cheap water-route. So much does the Panama Canal mean for California that the Ciiy of San Francisco will celebrate the completion of the great caral with a season of civic rejoicing in which the whole of the Pacific Coast will join. The opening of the markets of Virginia, Maryland, Deiaware, New York,Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine and New Jersey to the raw materials and native products of the Pacific States will mean great prosperity to California and the Pacific States. The effect of reciprocity will be to admit British Columbia to most of the great commercial advantages that the opening of the Panama Canal will bring. Our lumber will not only enter Washington and California free of duty. Reciprocity, plus the Panama Canal, will admit the lumber and shingles of British Columbia to every State on the Atlantic Coast from Texas to Maine. Reciprocity will open a sea route for the delivery of our fish free of duty to all the Southern States. The Panama Canal will open a market for the paper which recip- rocity will now enable the American dealers to buy in British Columbia free of duty. In the series of exclusive stories of progress and development which the Daily News is running in its news columns, we yesterday told of the intention of Mr. John Moore of the Great Northern pane Company to erect a large paper making plant in the vicinity of Prince Rupert if reciprocity goes through. Mr. Moore is not the only astute captain of industry who perceives that reciprocity and the Panama Cenal will mean an era of prosperity and development for British Columbia. No province or district in Canada stands to gain so much in every wig from the adoption of reciprocity as does Northern British Columbia. | NOVA SCOTIA MEN’S PLIGHT Wrecked in Mid-Pacific—Toiled and Starved in Open Boat Over 100 Miles of Sea—Com- rade Missing. perate that the captain and three men set out for Tahiti.
