'Manion, minister of railways jn the Bennett government, says that, so far, the government has invested $53,000,000 in the Hudson Bay route. The interest charges are two and a half million dollars annually and there has been a deficit on operation of the railway and port each year so far. However, he expects an improvement in business over the route this year, It was already announced that a number of ships were planning to enter Hudson Bay for cargo during the coming open season, August 8 to October 8. EACH DO A LITTLE While it may seem a little early to talk .about gardening, it is noticeable that a great many people have already started and some have turned 'oyer the soil from end to end of their gardens already. But it is not that we wish to talk about particularly. Last year we stronclv urced each one to flo something to improve the appearance of the city. We renew the suggestion this year. If each does something, if only the planting of a window box, the city will steadily improve in appearance from year to year. Its possibilities are tremendous. Recently James Grant, the markets commissioner, was in the city. He is a gardener and shows his ability by cultivating a beautiful little place a few miles out of Victoria. On it he has a rock garden which adds much to its attractiveness. While in Prince Rupert he remarked on the wonderful opportunities here for beautification. The city is laid out in such a way that it could easily be the prettiest city in Canada. Everything depends upon the neonle.
