It is stated that 225 gasoline launches from various American ports are engaged in purse seining, their catches being collected by a brigantine, which carries a cold storage plant. The fish are then taken into American ports, includ- ing Seattle and Port Townsend, for distribution thr- oughout the northwest. That is a picture of what is. It is of no use to revile the fish-poachers of the United States. The whole situation is the outcome of the present tariff situation which, forbids the Canadian fishermen to carry Canadian fish into any of the American States under a penalty of a cent a pound. The people of the United States must have fish. We have fish swarming on our banks but are unable to find a market for them. There is only one way by which the American people can defeat the tariff against Canadian fish. They steal the fish, and carry into Seattle on their own boats free of duty. Under different circumstances we might do the same. Under reciprocity all this will be changed. The removal of the cent a pound duty on fresh fish will open the markets of the United States to honest Canadian fish, honestly caught by Canadian fishermen on our own banks. Those two hundred and twenty-five American gasoline craft which the anti-reciprocity organ tells of, will be replaced by two hundred and twenty-five Canadian gasoline craft. The money | received from the sale of their catches will go to increase the wealth of the British Colymbian perople. Yesterday in the series of progress stories of the district which are appearing exclusively in the Daily News, we told of the organisation of a $200,000 company to erect another cold storage plant in Prince Rupert. On the previous day we told of the intention of Mr. John Moore and his associates to erect e large paper mill in the vicinity of Prince Rupert if reciprocity is adopted by the people of Canada at the forthcoming election. These are indications of the era of progress and development which | desert awaits Prince Rupert under reciprocity. In the News today is another exclusive news story, telling about | the new quarter million cold storage plant to be built at Claxton. A News reporter who visited Claxton was informed that the object | of this plant is to ship fresh fish in cold storage to the markets of the | Southern States, in similar fashion to the present cold storage plant | at Claxton which is shipping to the British market. | There is no tax against fish in Great Britain. There will be none in the United States when reciprocity is consummated. It is the | expectation that Sir Wilfrid Laurier will sweep the country from the | Atlantic to the Pacific that has resulted in Mackenzie and Mann deciding to erect the new cold storage plant at Claxton. Reciprocity will mean development and prosperity for the whole of British Columbia. The Continental Trust Co., Lid. AUTHORIZED CAPITAL $500,000 | OFFICERS: WM. T. SR. M.D., President DAVID H. Slowly but surely business in| Prince Rupert is taking a trend towards the other side of McBride street. The latest step in that direction is the new grocery store to be established without fietay'| by Jj. Shirley on his property on Sixth avenue and Bowser street. Mr. Shirley is already well known in the city having also a barber's business in the business section. His new store which will in every way an up to date and well equipped one handling all the best classes of goods, is to be situated on an important strategic point on the northeasterly side of Mc-} Bride street, viz., at the corner which is passed several times @ be day by most of the numerous residents in the school side of | Section Six. With Mr. A. Galland’s hard- ware store which was the first retail business premises to locate towards this side of the city, the new store will form a business link in a sense, between | the present residential Section Six, and the present business section. These stores are pioneering the way for a very thriving McBride | pe street district some day far distant. amongst not LAND PURCHASE NOTICE Skeena Land District—District of Coast Range V Take notice that Jesse M.
