Sug- gestions and criticisms are invited by the editor. The hope is expressed that “The FORTY CENT BEADS | | Thought to be Heirloom— You Can Get Some A girl who has just come back from Italy wore around her neck over a dark blouse a necklace of rope gold tied loosely at the bust line and finished with two long tassels. Every one who saw this chain spoke of its beauty, thinking it an heirloom. The chain was nothing but a rope of tiny gilt glass beads bought in Venice for about 40 cents. “I am sorry now,” she said, ‘‘that I did not get more of them. I brought one for a friend, and we have both had the same experience. Every one thinks it one of the old gold chains of colonial days. Over there they are so plentiful that it cheapened the chain to my own mind.” The friend, who was up in beadwork, straightway copied this chain for herself. She strung twelve strands of coarse yellow silk with the tiniest gilt beads to be found in this country, twisted them into a tightly coiled rope and finished the end with a big gold bead, from which hung tassels of the small ones. The effect was not so good as in the Venetian chain, for the same delicate beads could not be found, but a showy and unusual orna- ment was achieved to brighten a dark blouse. HCQUSEHOLD HINTS Exceedingly handsome are the ribbons of metal net, edged with and inch band of Persian silk. o°oo°0 should be a free from lumps. 00°98 and cool place it will remain un- tarnished for a long time. oo °o A little achohol rubbed on quick- ly wiil clean a dirty window better than soapsuds; ammonia in wash water is equally good. oo °o Physicians claim that sleep is more refreshing in a darkened room. It is well to accustom children from infancy to sleep in the dark. oo9 The true empire suit has yet to be evolved, and it is doubtful if it would prove worth while should it ever be renresented among fashionable moaels. °oo°9o Brass polished only with rotten- stone and oi! will have a deep, rich yellow tone, while the acid polishes leave it whiter and more brilliant. 9oo°o A flannel dipped in spirits of turpentine will be found very useful in cleaning the porcelain tub or sink. Kerosene will answer almost as well. oo°o Cut ostrich feathers are now being made into braids for trim- ming hats and dresses. These come in all colors that are adapted for street and house wear. {T. The Tigers have played to record crowds in every city on the circuit. The home patronage, however, is said to be far below the big league standard this season, despite the runaway race which the Felines threatened early in the season. oo9o The insinuation that Hal Chase may have picked up the wrong pitcher Clarke from the Western brush seems somewhat substantia- ted by the latest averages. Up to Sunday the Clarke of Sioux City (now a Yankee) had won but four and lost nine games. The Clarke of Topeka, who is said to be the real live wire has won ten and lost seven. Topeka, by the way, is in next to last position while Sioux City is one of the pennant contenders. to stop oo 90 A Cleveland despatch says that Cy Young, the grand old man’ of baseball, has been unconditionally released by the Cleveland club.
