The Christian Science Monitor has a representative going through the country just now and writing of things as he sees and hears them. The writer talked to one man who was a member of the American Communist Party for many years before he came to Russia. He is a native-born American, a sincere and clear-sighted idealist. For several years he has worked m Soviet factories, refusing offers of "white collar" jobs in order to mingle with the workers and take an active part m their social life. Now, however, he is endeavoring to accumulate the necessary "valuta" to return-to America. J cannot endure the exploitation of the working man which goes on here as it does in other countries," he declared. My Russian Communist friends tell me that I am not patient, that I do not understand this is a temporary phase. But Soviet methods of exploitation of their own workers, whatever the avowed purpose of such treatment .may.be, are more ruthless and crude than any to which I have been accustomed in my own country. There is less consideration for the average working man in Russia.to-l$yWM ,n any Capitalist country with which I am fami- , The m3n was. asked if he wouUrreioin.the Communist r Russian Communist leaders iwh6 are so'ruthlessly ex-ploiting their own workers now in the hope of building a new socia order in some distant future. But he is not able to agree that any end, however idealistic, justifies the present methods by which he declares the rights of individual 5nto'K Kihe allegedly higher interests I asked this man if he would rejoin the Communist Party when he returned to his own country.
