Advertising and CUcnlaUon. Telephone. St. 81 Thursday, .Sept. 6, 1934 RADIO RECEPTION HERE The federal department having the matter of radio reception in hand is wise in-hesitating to advise the power company to go to any extensive expense in making alterations to its transmission line here until-it, is definitely ascertained, by, the making of tests which are now in progress, that such changes would have the desired result of eliminating noises emanating from the line and.improving reception. On the other hand, owners: of radio receivers in Prince Rupert, and there are many of them here whose investment in the aggregate would make a very imposing total, are justified in. expecting that the power company will do everything possible, after the tests have been, made, to remove such disturbance as may be caused by the power line. There seems to be no doubt but that the- power line is responsible for some of the trouble but there are also probably other disturbing factors which efforts should be made to eliminate also. Even though their patience may have been, taxed it is to be questioned if anything is to be gained by the resolve of some of the local radio set owners to refuse to pay their licence fees further until some service is given them in the way of improving reception and making their sets more useful and' enjoyable. That does not say that they should not be sympathized with for the exasperating, difficulties that beset radio reception here. The government, nevertheless, can probably enforce collection of the annual licence fee if it wishes to go to the length of doing so. Refusing to pay the licence will probably not make the authorities any more sympathetic Possibly it might be just as effective to "play the game," pay the licence and keep up the agitation for improved radio reception here until those rfsble are "shamed" into taking, some action. i, ' PUBLIC AVOIRS PROGRAM. The $800,000 public works program announced by the provincial government as being about to commence cannot be expected by any means to meet the needs for vork in this province. This,- augmenting whatever the federal government, may decide to do, will not even meet the requirement The best that can be said of it is that it will be at leaet a. little mpre than has been done during the past year or so and would appear to be a step in the very desirable direction .of replacing, the policy of direct relief with a plan of work and wages. There is a long way. to go. yet, however, before the need for gainful employment has been met and the people will be impatient until further progress is made.
