At that time we were all very hopeful for the future and expected Prince Rupert to be a big city in a few years. We still expect Prince Rupert to be a bip citv but the rniiMintr will tnkp time We Viqvo tn An, U 1 C tJ " w . m mm wMak waasax VI w a a a. WU V I VS 1 V step by step, sometimes faster and sometimes' slower. We have to adapt ourselves to changing conditions. With the passing of the depression which has hit almost every city Itl kkflT rtnllnlMt. . V... l- i-1 j 1 -I 1 1 1 ? . . 1 ..... . ' ticij tuuuujf imuujiuuL me wurm we snau una ourselves resuming our normal building operations before very long and with a revival in the building trades will come increased spending power and general activitv. The big salmon season will help but it will be followed by poor seasons. In looking ahead we must expect poor seasons and good ones. The difficulty is to get rid of the idea that temporary prosperity is going to be permanent prosperity. During the past sixteen years there have been many tips and downs. There has been considerable building done since that time. Practically the whole of Westview has been built; all the soldiers' houses were erected, the elevator built, a number of business r . llltllIU(U stores including the Moose Hall, Besner Building, the bllildinff where Klin's new sWp is InnntaA flio V,;Tri;,J which houses DeJorig's Cash & Carry, the Canadian Le-t gion home, two stores, one of which is occupied by Selvig's -Market, two stores on Second Avenue occupied by Grat-tdn, the building occupied by McClymont and Ireland, and Other buildings including many dwellings throughout the . city. r Sixteen years ago practically all the streets were PlanH&aAll these have since been graded and surfaced tjnd Soite permanent or semi-permanent sidewalks have been laid A hydro-electric power plant has been installed by the Northern B. C. Power Co. Ltd. All along the waterfront there have been great improvements. The big ocean dock has been built, the new cold storage plant and many smaller buildings. Everywhere there has been improvement. Also there has been a good start made m beautifying the city with lawns and gardens. As to the future it is impossible to prophesy. We expect great improvements and extensions, increases in population, new buildings. Much will depend upon the people themselves. If each does a little and all work with a common purpose we shall build a city of which we may 3 be proud. FREE TROUSERS!! FREE TROUSERS!! FOOTBALL! Tonight POSTPONED THE DAILY KSvTS Tuesday. July 31 nil SOFTBALL ioLuuoL Grotto and C.W. It. A. Winners in Pair of Uninspiring Games Softball faus last night witnessed ' fourteen innings of haphazard and lop-sided ball when two seven-lh-nlngs City League matches were staged in the Canadian National Recreation Association ball purk. in the first game, the regularly scheduled league fixture, the ever- powerful Grotto nine found It soft work to subdue au erring herd of Moose ball-droppers to the tune of ll to 4. If a stranger had arrived about the fourth or fifth innings he would have thought he had come on nothing but a batting practice or at the best, a pick-up game, so de sultory and careless was the play put up by the Moose. This game was stopped at the end or the seventh to make way for the second fumble- rest of the evening with the Junior Elks the fumblers and the Cantt - i dian National Recreation Assoc la - tlon the winners. This match, re- .,l-i.. .. .. 1 aicu iui i ruursuay evening was put ahead to last night. If It never had been played it would have been O.K. with the ma-' Jority of the watching cltl2enry.; .. . The forcible Railroad- ers had a clear board all the wayjclfic Coast stars at the tournament tnrough and It was no hardship fort them to win by a score of 9 to 1. 1 With only seven hits In the whole game, four by the victors and three ! by the Blundering Herd, It can eas-1 ily be deduced that there must' have been a plentltude of errors to ! allow the Railroaders to amass nine! runs In seven innings. ; Luckily darkness gently intervened J I with two Innings to go or the score might have b?en even more ' top-heavy.
