MeMordie needs any to champion his sense of justice as well kindness toward his fel- low man. This young pled guilty to vagrancy. He sentenced to thirty days, which sentence was suspended, and immediately after- ward Col to one as man the was in question charge of MecMordie appealed me in this man’s behalf and se- cured from me a promise of a job for him at 606 cents per hour He even arranged that this man be advanced sufficient for his meals and lodging until pay day. I was struck at the time by this sxceptional interest and that no hardship be inflicted upon this young man and that he be given every chance to help him- self. I might add for the infor- nation of Alderman Casey that the young man did not shaw up for work. I believe that we are fortunate n having in Magistrate McMordie a man with a profound respect for the laws of our land and yet with personal interest in the infortunate class who are called before him. Very truly yours, J. R. MORGAN. desine a STIRRING DRAMA AT EMPRESS THEATRE Dorothy Dalton at Westhoime in Story About Actors and Love. A stirring drama of the gold ush of °49 is “As the Sun Went Dewn,” which is featured tonight if the Empress Theatre. The part of Colonel Billy is played by Edith Storey and she does it well. It is a colorful romarfee of the screen, a vital drama. Dorothy Dalton in “Hard Boil- “l'’ comes to the Westholme (>- ight and tomorrow in a story of ctors, of love, and of disappoint- nent with final consummation. The skinflint deacon who tries to oree his attentions on the hero- ne shows up badly. The story s well up to the standard of Miss iolton’s work. “OLONEL EVANS IS NOW AT NEW YORK 8. Frank Evans, who was in artnership with W. Shrubsall in the fish business here some years ago is now a colonel in the in- elligenece office of he British army and is located at New York where he lives with his wife at he Waldorf Astoria. Mr. Fvans has advanced very rapidly in the emy. He left Prinee Rupert be- fore the war and enlisted im- nediately on the outbreak of hostilities He was wounded no less than three times and was awarded the Distinguished Ser- viee Order decoration before he went to the United States. It is expected that he will remain per- manently with the War Office. PACK TRAINS CARRY SUPPLIES TO BABINE Large pack trains are now leay- ing Hazelton for the north with winter supplies. On Tuesday a forty horse train set out with all kinds of supplies for Fort Babine which about fifty miles from Hazelton and is still a Hudson's Bay post. Soon it will be impos- sible to take freight in there ex- cept by dogs and the packers are kept very busy just now rushing supplies in. Each horse packs about 300 pounds and the journey is made in spells, it taking four ov five days to make the trip. is Last Sunday two of the younger huntsmen of the city had a rather stirring experience the ay. Sidney Bazzett-Jones and Alex Rix went out in the mornin on the trail of the wary deer and ACTOSBS evidently, must have looked too long and too far. At any rate they got lost and stayed ont till well into the night when they got their bearings by the moon, Sometimes people lose their bear- ings by moonlight, but not these huntsmen, They got no deer but they got home.
