Parts of Canada For All Manufactured Goods Plan is Suggested to Make Working of Tariff More Equitable to the People of the Whole Country That all distribution costs should be pooled and that all manufactured goods should be sold at the same price in every city in Canada is the claim of J. D. McKenna, writing in "Canadian Business." He says that the tariff does not at present work out equitably and that most of the benefit goes to a few of the larger cities. Eighty-five per- :ent of all manufactured goods are itoduced In Ontario and Quebec, eaving only, fifteen percent to be cement running into hundreds of thousands of dollars and not a pound of cment is manufactured there. "My contention is that this intolerable condition should be re moved in connection with the production of all articles In Canada enjoying protection under the Canadian tariff, and that all such commodities should be sold at a uniform price throughout the Do minion. I would make It a condition under the Canadian tariff that this be done so that all Canadians shall derive some- benefit from protec tion. It is true that the man in Toronto or Montreal will pay some slight advance for goods manufac tured within his own dty, but he would still retain the inestimable benefits widen he now enjoys and which his fellow-Canadians living even in the remote parts of his own province do not share. It eems to me that the tariff has put all the eggs in a very few baskets ind left many baskets in British Columbia, Alberta. Saskatchewan, Manitoba, remote parts of Ontario, remote parts of Quebec Nova Scotia. New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island without even a pullet's egg. "I urge that anuther advantage of uniform prices Is that cut throat competition would be eli- mg, as indicated aDove, mat minated because a manufacturer's eighty-five percent of all Canadian 'established price at one point manufactured goods are produced , would automatically apply to an-)n a few communities in Ontario j other, and Quebec, It will "be readily ap- i predated how much of the taxes of these cities are paid by people iwho reside outside the confines of ; BRITAIN IS CRITICIZED A progressive road policy and .1 f weaUh and a :!lm"'- Declares it is Saving Sl,m; 7 (customers, works. , practicable In all public An improved program of health!
