' ? I Thursday. January 3, 1935 SHIPPING GRAIN HERE ' It is satisfactory to know that, after much delay, the -Alberta Wheat Pool is now shipping grain from this port and that wheat is rolling in from the prairies to fill the bins as the ships take away the grain. We hope this work will continue for a while for every boat that comes here provides work and wages for a number of people. Also the "officers and crews spend money here and so do the Van couver officials vhp come here to superintend the ship-; A SPLENDID EFFORT We congratulate the officers of the First North B. C. lifcgiment on theit splendid effort in securing a drill hall f for this city While it is not yet completed we are told it: will be before long. j For years the activities of the regiment have been han-i dicapped by lack of a suitable building. The Dominion government at.pne time offered lo lease the present hall from the former owner at a rent about twice as high as isj being paid how. As it is they secure a building which is i I frantically 'pivned by the regiment and which can be im-'j proved frorri time to time until it becomes one of theumost up-to-date On the coast. The-succes&f the move, which : started a yar ago, 'shows what can be done when a small ; group of mdli are in real earnest in trying to secure some-i tiling. We hope they will continue their efforts and makei the new institution a valuable one to the city. i t ASUIT ABLE RECOGNITION While we do not believe in the granting of titles as a system of rewarding those citizens whose work has been outstanding, we must admit that the recognition brought to Dr. J. S. Plaskett for his work at the astro-physical station at Saanioh near Victoria Is a very suitable one. Evidently with a view to justifying the return of the system, Premier Bennett is exercising great care in choosing those who should be recommended to the King for special honors. In the old days governments were not so wise. The idea of providing more practical education with thp useful rather than the cultural end in view pervaded Mr. Mitchell's address. Manual training and home econo- whereby these useful courses could be given without teaching staff ad dition or increased cost. In passing. Mr. Mitchell gave an Interesting definition of education as being "what you have left after you have forgotten everything you have learned in school " Gymnasium Project Before closing. Mr. Mitchell took occasion to mention the local gymnasium or community hall project. In communities much smaller and less important than this fine and well equipped community halls had been provided. It seemed Inexplicable to him that Prince Rupert should go along so long without doing anything. He believed that it could be readily accomplished if there was the proper leadership and a determination to see It through. It was, he felt, a challenge to every citizen and. particularly the parents, to see that something like this was provided so that the spare time of the youth might be profitably occupied. The time had passed when youths could be kept occupied and out of mischief by working In their spare time. There was not the work available todav and the proper occupying of this' spare time was more than ever a serious problem. In the course of his address.
