April 9, 1935 Prince Rupert will be more interested in the federal election campaign about to take place in the Peace River see-on of Alberta because of the fact that Page Rideout, postle of the western outlet, seems likely to be the Liberal andidate fcbere. On another page is an interesting news article from the town of Peace River in regard to the pol-which Mr. Rideout is advocating in the Alberta section of the Psace country and which he is said to be planning to proclpimt Ottawa if he is chosen candidate and is elected as.tofcrjhber for that district. We recommend it as of particular Interest at thi3 time.- , Mr. Rideout i a farmer but he is also an economist and omething of a politician. For many years we have heard his name jheniioned as one of the champions of the district and p&rfieulary of the scheme for better rail connection with the Pacific seaboard. He is an able speaker and a clear thicker and he has now crystallized his plans and seem? to he putting them forward with greater force and clearness than ever before. We sincerely hope that the Deople of Peace River win gee fit to nominate him fnr thP House of Commons and feel' sure that his policy will an- peai to meaji so strongly that he will be elected in that constituency. .If he. should go to Ottawa, Prince Rupert will fladlv ioir, hand3 in th mnvpmpnr tn inrlnpp tha fvWol government of the day, Liberal or Conservative, to build the railway through to join the Canadian National Railways at the most convenient noint in order to reach Prinrp Rupert where we have all the facilities ready to ship their grain, AsK" Is, the Prince Rupert terminal elevator handles a gooa ueai 01 rcace Kiver wheat. With a western outlet direct to this port the farmer would get a much better price for hi? product .and we should get more of the grain, probably all of it. V'e are mutually interested. Old Massett natives always depended upon halibut as their winter food but recently the Department of Fisheries notified the Indians that they cannot ob tain halibut for their food. They were told that they were killing off the fish on their spawning ground. The Indians say: "The Canadian Government seems to overlook the fact that, we have always obtained our halibut from the mouth of Massett Inlet even from the days prehistoric and. yet the halibut continued to increase. We were mistreated from the very first day that the whites came. We were de, niod all our previous rights and we haven't even the right to vote We are penned up In small plots of land called 'Reserves ' and the Do minion Government says that it is our guardian. They push us around wherever they can keep us out of sight In silence. We are denied all rights of our country. Now they are taking one of the very few prlvl leges left to us away. We cannot exist under the pressure any long er." An Indian was arrested on the sixth of April for obtaining halibut for food. He states that he did not think the Dominion Government cruel enough to convict an Indian for obtaining his native food. A meeting was held by the Mas sett Indians to discuss and consider what steps they might take regarding the stand taken by the govern ment in preventing the Indians from obtaining fish for food. If It wasn't for the strong Christian na tive leaders, who opened the meet ing with prayer, It is doubted if violence could have been avoided, IVAN ADAMS.
