JOHN Plans Prepared for Modern Adaptation of One of Prince Rupert's Pioneer Hotel Build- ings to Cater for New Class of Trade. One of the opineer hostelries of Prince Rupert, the St. John Hotel is to undergo transformation shortly. Plans have been prepared to turn the hotel into a thoroughly up-to-date building te cater for the best The proprietor, Mr. J. S. Bonneau, will expend a considerable amount of money the work, and when complete the St. John Hotel, though one of the first buildings of its kind to go up in Prince Rupert off the reserve, will rank with the newest hotel buildings, not however on such a large scale the central business class of business. on as those in section. The building consists of two storeys and basement, and is a substantial one capable of con- siderable adaptation to the new class of business. A handsome new decorated front is planned for, and the buiiding throughout will be painted freshly, decorated, and plastered. Besides this there will be an entire re-equipment of the hotel fittings, and an installa- tion of modern plumbirg, hot and cold water and all modern con- veniences. W. S. Barker is archi- tect for the alterations. Situated as it is on First avenue near Second street the hotel likely to meet with the ready patronage as the boat wharf and railway depot are within a stone’s throw of the building. First ave- nue is being rapidly graded, and this part of the town, owing to the forthcoming G. T. P. improve- ments on the reserve will be much enhanced by next summer. MOUNT ETNA’S THREATS is Peasants Fear a Repetition of Massena Disaster (Canadian Press Despatch) Catania, Sept. 13.—The crest of Mount Etna presents a terrifying spectacle. Heavy smoke lies over it, and frequent brilliant flashes of flame are accompanied by a rumbling like heavy artillery fire. DUFF PATTULLO SCORES McBRIDE (Continued from page one) “Sir Wilfrid, I believe, once said that when history came to be written he hoped that his name would always live in con- nection with the building of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. Laudable is that desire, I believe that there is another re- gard in which Laurier will live longer in the history of his country; I refer to the spirit of tolerance to which I have already adverted. “Whatever may have been the great gulf dividing the two political parties at Ottawa, however bitter and acrimoniuos might be dis- cussions, whatever the racial and religious cries formulated and pro- mulgated for purposes of political advantage, over and above all there has always risen the out- standing figure.of Sir Wilfrid Lau- rier, urgent and serene in its plea for a greater national unity and a greater national development. “Here’s to you, Sir Wilfrid Laurier; of blood, French; of loyalty, British; of ideal, Can- adian; you're the greatest Can- adian of us all. May God prosper you and long preserve you to further the service of your country" NAVIGATION OF SHIP OF STATE Cy Peck’s Felicitous Compari- son of Sir Wilfrid Laurier to the Skilful Navigator of the Dangerous Rapids of the Skeena. as C. W. Peck has returned from a speaking tour with Duncan Ross up the Skeena, and a quota- tion from one of the clever speeches he made during the trip seems worthy of reproduction. He was speaking to the voters of Hazelton, and in the course of the address said: “I believe a trip up the Skeena river is one of the most thrilling and interesting that may be en- joyed in the whole run of world travel.
