Every man who has served as chief magistrate hue has been a resident since before the Incorporation, city Commissioner W. J. Alder, who has been in charge since May 15, 1933, is also a qualified The late 8. M. Newton held the record of length of service as mayor of Prince Rupert with eight years. Incidentally, he is the only mayor of the city who has passed beyond. Mayors of Prince Rupert who stUl reside here are M. P. McCaf-fery, Thomas McClymont, H. B. Rochester, C. H. Orme and M. M. Stephens. Technically, T. D. Pat-tulk) is still a resident of Prince Rupert, being Member of the Legis lature for this seat although his duties as Prime Minister of British Columbia require him to reside in Victoria. Alfred Stork, first mayor of the city, now lives in retirement in Brampton, Ont.; William Manson, second mayor, is in Vancouver, in which city Lieut-Col S. P. McMor-dle also now resides. Judge William Edward Fisher was the first lawyer to nail up his shingle in' Prince Rupert, having landed in town in May 1907 from AUln. He carried on the profession here unUl two years ago when he was appointed to the bench which he now occupies with honor and dignity. PIONEERS' PRESIDENT BUILT FIRST HOME IN CITY OF PR. RUPERT Silver Jubilee Year president of the Prince Rupert Pioneers' AssoclaUon, P. W. Anderson helped to hew Prince Rupert out of the wilderness. He arrived here in 1906 from Ana-cortes, Wash., to undertake the contract of clearing 250 acres of townslte. He built the first home in Prince Rupert, occupying It the year of hU arrival. Later he went into general contracting business and for some years was road superintendent for the provincial government Mrs. Anderson was the first white woman to take up residence here. ALFRED STORK Following incorporation of the city in 1910, Prince Rupert ettisea choso for their first mayor Fred Stork who had also been first mayor of the city of Fernle whence he came here in 1908 among the early pioneers. In 1922, Mr. Stork was elected Member of the Canadian House of Commons for Skeena and represented the seat at Ottawa until 1926. Stephens, who served as mayor of Prince Ruper; 'or ihv early part of 1933 before the city reverted to a commtssionershjp, came here in 1903 from Phoenix. He was instrumental in the organization of the Prince Rupert Board of Trade and was its first .secretary- Always taking a keen Interest in civic affairs, he served as alderman for five years. Ever courageous In the advocacy of principles of efficiency and economy, the clUzens turned to him In the extremity of the depression and swept him into office as mayor in 1933. He and his council saw in the appointment of a commissioner the only way out and acted accordingly.
