The statement of the minister of railways in the House of Commons as published in this paper yesterday, is a distinct advance over previous statements in that the minis-tr committed himself as favoring continued construction cm the route north of the Peace River, which is directly in the direction of Prince Rupert and seems to commit the government to, the use of the Peace Pass as against any other of the Western passes through the mountains. ( The chief objection-tli at can be taken to the resolution passed by the; House-is that it sets no time for commencement of work oh the extension. The minister of railways 'amended the motion of Donald Kennedy, member for Peace River, by adding the words "when circumstances permit" However, the minister gave hope that the work might be commenced this year. Evidently the forthcoming election is having some effect on the government in regard toits railway construction policy and we are hoping 'that it is something more than an election promise. Practically all the primary industries have shown decided advances, customs collections are up, field crops showed ah increase of something like two million dollars. Every jnrutry seems to lywe been affected. The review closes with the following words: "The firfct month of 1935 finds business sentiment more optimistic than in any new year since 1929."
