se aes cok. ELECTION DAY UNEVENTFUL (Continued from page one) occasionally, but so much to the ers was seen was not nearly fore as his rival. Although the ladies took a lively interest in the election they did not make the fact radiantly evident by wearing ribbon favors. Flag- Waving too, was conspiciously ab- sent during the day, even the ubiquitous small boy proving back- ward in election fervor at first. One live display at least was made by Arthur Little who had frort pages of the morning ‘‘Daily News” (first morning paper ever published in Prince Rupert) posted lavishily about his stand. One prominent office near the waterfront bore the legend ‘‘Back in a few minutes. Gone to Vote for Ross.'’ At the Conservative committee rooms little groups of Clements’ supporters hung around, but there was no excitement. Organisers for both sides, how- ever, were extremely busyrounding up stray voters. Various conveyances were com- mazdeered to rush voters into the polls. Large rigs fitted up with cushioned benches rendered excellent service, and with teams of powerful horses often made good speed. About three o'clock one passed the school empty. It was instantly besieged by a torrent of youngsters who en- joyed a glorious rig-ride home- wards and formed quite the most enthusiastic freight the rig had carried all day. In the Pony Express light auto, which fitted with cushioned seats has carried sight seers around Rupert this summer, many electors were car- ried luxuriously to record their votes. Towards five p.m. the® rush intensified a little, and the last few voters hurried in before the polls closed were hailed with ex- citement. , After the closing of the polis, a crowd gathered waiting for the announcement of the re- sult. Both candidates, and the Mayor were there with many supporters when the figures were given out showing a big majority for Ross in Rupert. The result was hailed with great cheering, and much battering of tin cans by small boys, prominent amongst whom was the little son of a most marked local Conservative. Mr. Clements and the Mayor hurried off as quietly as possible, “not looking very pleased about it’ as a man in the crowd arked. Until evening, there was then a complete lull in the election ex- citement. SELLING LUMBER TO CANADA United States Has Hard Wood That Canada Does Not Grow rem Canada is dependent for its lumber supply on the soft woods of the forest much more than is the United States, as seen from the 1910 Forest Products. report compiled by the Dominion: For- estry Branch and shortly to be published. Of the 1910 Canadian lumber cut amounting to nearly five billion feet, only one-twentieth consisted of hardwoods or broad- leafed trees, worth barely five million dollars; on the other hand almost one quarter of the lumber cut in the United States consists of hardwoods of which Canada purchased over $7,000,000 worth. Nearly all of these imports are from the United States and consist of the most valuable species such as oak, hickory, tulip or yellow poplar, chestnut, gum, walnut, cherry and a large amount of hard pine which is so frequently used as a hardwor'l. BIG LINER RAMMED London, Sept.. 21—Upon leaving Southampton today for New York the White Star liner Olympic, the largest steamer afloat, with every berth filled, was rammed by the big British cruiser Hawke. Only a prompt beaching of the huge liner prevented the worst marine disaster in history. The Olympic carried three thousand p sengers. her own steam.
