'DAILY EDITION Member of Audit Bureau of Circulations CHANCE IN SYSTEM 98 W $5.00 .10 Saturday, March 30, 1935 STRATEGIC POINT Archbishop D. T. Owen of Toronto, Primate of the Anglican .Church in Canada, sees Prince Rupert as a stra tegic point that must, for national and imperial reasons,! be developed, People who live in Prince Rupert would like to see Prince Rupert develop but for far different reasons. They realize its strategic importance and can see how, from that standpoint, it should be necessary to build up here an important port but they would like to see it in order that they may be able to make a better living and that they may enjoy more of the facilities of modern city life. ; '' Prince Rupert residents feel that in the past they have hot been always treated well either by the various federal govrnments or by the railway company. Even the provincial government shut down our hierhwav work several years agfa, removed the plant and for several years nothing was done until the present administration came into power. It has not seemed to us in the past that any but ourselves recognised the strategic value of Prince Runert. Many have talked abqut it but the talk did not seem to influence their actions. If the church has any influence we hope it will be used to impress the east with the importance of this port to the nation and ven to the. Empire. Possibly the vision of the thurchman is far greater than that of big business and ve shall yet .conje mto our own. - The Archbishop was on less solid ground when he spoke of the menaces which he saw today in the life of the people t)f Canada. He considered it a menace that people were looking for a change in the system of administration, rather than trying to work out our salvation in the old way, namely by hard work and f ruiralitv. ', Whether we like it or not, the system of government is changing rapidly, The old plan under which a privileged few had practically everything and the rest of mankind! Avere hewers of wood and drawers of water for those few is rapidly passing, although it dies hard. The old system has failed miserably to provide for conditions of life as they are today and, the sooner we realize it, the better. With a million people out of employment in this country Hying on Ihe dole, It is evident that there is something wrpng. Any system which allows that is wrong. It has to be changed. Communists would bring about a change by means of a bloody revolution following which there would be established a dictatorshon of the nroletariat. Others hP- lpYe in the game dictatorship but do not want, to fight for it. They would bring it about "by constitutional means." yn im other hand there is liberalism which believes in bringing about a change gradually. Today liberalism is permeating the Conservative political party as well as the Wberal party, being forced thereto by political exigencies, The Liberal .party is the motive power in snite of some Liberals Who hold hack. The ereat thfrnr'ts thnr. thP changes are juade, not rapidly enough for some people but too rapidly for others, More chanires will have to be mad and a system evolved under which it will be possible for any roan whp is willing to work to live decently, He will jiot have to beg for relief. Under that system there will be none very rich and none poor. To such an end we should All strive but beware lest we be turned from the course by false jprophets who entice us with all sorts of panaceas. I. ,1 Mil . . I B The Letter Bnx si1 !
