We often make a fuss about things that really do not matter much and at the same time we neglect trie things that are important. Take the present situation. There as today an election campaign going on and a great many people get all worked up over it. Hut this should not toe necessary. All we are doing is trying to choose the best -possible man to represent us at Ottawa. "Naturally we all have our favorites. We would like to send Olof Hanson for .a second term believing that be 3s more capable of serving us well during bis second term than be was an the . last and also believing that 3t is good for Prince Rupert to have a member who is in sympathy with the next government. We notice that even the C.C.F. organ acknowledges that the Liberals will form the next government but they intimate their party will be tbe official opposition. This we do not expect. This week a man came into the office to pay his sub scription to this paper. He told us that he was planning to support the C.C.F. candidate at this election. We told him that was bis privilege. While we believe the Liberal course is the better one every man is entitled to his opinion. The country will not suffer very greatly if the (10.F. candi date is elected. He is reported to be an excellent person. Many of .our best friends are Conservatives. They are supporting . H. Orme and we cannot imagine any barm that would come to the city if Mr. Orme should be elected, dreadful as some of our Liberal friends might feel it to be. In fact Mr. Orme would make an excellent candidate if he were only a Liberal. FIRST THINGS FIHST While we all think the election important and talk i good deal about it, as a matter of fact, it is not so important as it might seem. Many look upon it as a big sport event on which .they have a chance to wager a little money. We strongly, urge people to vote and to take an intelligent interest in politics but there are other much more ' important things in this country. : We suggest that what a person does for hie city or his country is much more important than what he thinks or I what view of Government he expresses through the ballot. Take -the purely local view of it. What have you as a citizen done to improve Prince Rupert to make it cleaner, brighter, more beautiful, more attractive to outsiders? That is more important than how you will vote -on election day. Have you painted your house, kept the fences in order, kept the weeds -out of the garden, given any of your time to public service such as Chamber of Commerce or service club work? Can you point to any one definite movement you have made which will entitle you to say that the city ot .mnce Rupert is the better for your having lived in it? If you have done that, you have done much better than' voting Liberal or Conservative or C.C.F. or any other way. Some Prince Rupert people have tried to prepare their souls for lif e in another world but we can think of no way in which they could .better do that than to do, something to make Prince Rupert a little more like heaven than it has been in the past. Heaven is a place of beauty, we are told, but how is a person to appreciate that beauty if he has taken no interest in it while here? Heaven is a place where everything is harmonious yet we must Jeam to live in harmony with pur neighbors here if we are to appreciate harmony in -the life to come. The things that really count in this life are not how we vote, what we believe, or what we expect to be in a possible life to come. The great outstanding fact of life is what we do. Are we leaving any mark behind us by which we will he known in future7 ; This little sermon mav not be strictly orthodox but we; ask our readers to think about it. We are not just now: thinking of things we should not do. The positive is always' better than the negative. We want to see Prince Rupert the best Jitje . city in the world and it can be made that if we are ainltod in .our purpose, ach one doing something. BAPCO Is a hlgh-grada Paint for general use.
