THE DAILY NEWS ed the Plant of the B.C. at Work int the interest taken in the development of the Island, the Daily News has arranged for a Owing to being résources of Graham special correspondent to visit the various points on the Island and write series of short articles of which the following the first telling of a visit to the new oil territory on the west coast. (Special Correspondence) Masset, Sept. 380.—A launch trip, to the west coast of the island, is an experience that few have undertaken. At certain sea- sous, it is considered dangerous, there being few places of refuge from Langara Island to Otard Fay. We were fortunate enough to make the journey safely; but will not be anxious to repeat the visit to the oil plant of the B. C. Oil- ficlds Company. There we found seven men at work, with a drilling plant representing ten thousand dollars and considered one of the best it: Canada. The men are through the shale and are now in limestone formation, a_ per- cursor of the oil beneath. That they were jubilant over the show- ings obtained, would be telling but the truth. As usual, they had several set- backs caused by the lack of LIVE DANCE AT PORT ESSINGTON Happy Gathering of Residents and Friends the Other Night in Cunningham's Hotel. Mu- sic, Dancing, and a Jolly Good Time. A delightful social evening and dance took place over at Port Essington the other night. The assembly was held in Cunningham's Hotel, the dining room of which was tastefully decorated for the occasion. To instrumental music supplied by Mr. T. Alexander and other members of the company the dance was kept up in live style till the small hours. The hotel is centrally situated for the a is \ Daily News Correspondent at Graham Island Inspect- Oilfields Drills are Now he Limestone the driller left for the south Another man has been engage and the work is progressing satis to stake a few claims, and we ar¢ now prospective oil magnates. Accompanying us was the owner and his opinion is that there are no better oil grounds anywhere. where he placed the samples befor opinion has been received verifying the report of Mr, Andrews, who had previously reported on them most favorably. The “shale’’ formation on the west coast of Graham Isiand is all “in place,’’ which indicates that there has been no disturbance by which oil would escape. In the tests made, as the drill de- scends, oil has been encountered of a quality that will excel any “parrafine’’ yet found on the Pa- cific Coast. It is not expected that the ‘‘oil sands”’ will be encountered at a less depth than two thousand feet, and the fact that limestone is now being extracted shows that the ‘“‘capping’’ is perfect. PASTOR NAMED > ALD. HILDITCH Rev. F. W. Kerr on the Warpath Against Representatives of the People as Chosen under Democratic Rule Scores the System. In the course of his address to the evening audience in the Em- press Theatre last night, Rev. F. W. Kerr criticised and condemned the Democratic system of govern- ment. He said that the system seemed to him imperfect those chosen by the people to represent them in parliament were so often poorly qualified. Under democracy there was no difficulty in securing a@ nomination as can- didate provided man were since a a district, and is quite near the Hot Springs so there was a_ good attendance of residents from around there, and the evening’s enjoyment went with a_ swing. Refreshments served by Mr. Per- kins of the hotel, acceptably ac- counted for the intervals in the dancing. Amongst those present were: Miss F. Noble, A. J. Mathe- son, Clyde Hunter, Mrs. G. Church Mr. J. L. Christie, Mr. A. R. Mackie, Mrs. S. Kirby, Miss M. C. Inrig, Mr. W. Reith, Mr. Jack McDonald, Mr. L. Kendall, Con- stable W. R. Carmichael, W. G. Other qualifications counted for nothing. The pastor thought that in this system lay the source of grafts and kindred abuses by men in power in the government. “Under democracy,” said the preacher, “any one at all may become a representative of the people. A rail splitter may be- come a president like Lincoln or a carpenter may become an alder- man like Mr. Hilditch.’’ There was quite a small sensation in the audience at this remark. The of the modest young car- penter laying down his hammer to achieve the exalted ambition of becoming a president like Lincoln or “an alderman like Mr. Hilditch,’’ was too much for the self repressive faculties | of even a Presbyterian congregation, idea and saw douce lubricating oil and the fact that ' factorily.
