DAILY EDITION T TTTT .V: QIi"2VTT?lP AVPP 98 86 Friday, September 4, 1936 In connection with the recent political campaign at .Vancouver it "was noticed'' that the C. C. F. meetings were much better attended than those of the other parties. In one or tw;o cases: oie of ,tb.e newspapers noted particularly the paucity of attendance at the meetings of the winning candidate. This goes .to show that the attendance at meetings lias little to "do with the general trend of public opinion. People, go out to see the fun if they think there is likely to be heckling. Also there is a section of every community that likes to hear other people .ci'itjqixed ajid jibed' at. Any newspaper could increase its circulation appreciably if it were" willing to lend its columns to jibes and sneers and unwarranted criticisms. PORTLAND CANAL DEVELOPMENT The Premier mine was for many years the only shipping mine in the Portland Canal area but its continued operation lielped to inspire others with faith in the district and with the hope that another similar mine might be developed. Now the Big Missouri will soon take its place as a second large shipper of ore concentrates which will make the Salmon RiVer vallev outstanding as a nroducer of gold and silver. The fact that a company such as the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Comoanv is develop ing the mine- and putting it into production insures that it will be done in such a.wav as to brinir the best results. There are other probabilities In the same district that may i 1 1 i " prove to De snipping mines some day. FALL ACTIVITIES This is. the season when fall activities commence after a long Summer holiday during which many Prince Rupert peopie were away irom .home at tleast part of th,e time. Al ready the days'are shortening and there are sisrns of aut umn in the am The churches are lavincr nlans for trreat activity and doubtless they will receive loyal support.' Fraternal ahd-.other societies will be holding meetings regularly and putting on entertainments. Snort enthusiasts will be planning their winter schedules and with mnnev a little more plentiful this year the season is unusually promising. Activity tends to happiness and contentment. "spoMghatI Mighty enough to win the Cana- dian rugby championship last sea. son, Wlnnlpegs swing into a frHlT ' lln schedule this Saturday appar-; Meanwhile Reglna Rough Riders, other member of the Western Con ference and outstanding for years on Canadian grldirpns, are drilling a potent squad for the opening of the Saskatchewan season in Sas katoon on Labor Day. They meet Hilltops. Members of the Western Conference meet each other four times during the regular season, giving each team eight conference games, four at home and four away. In addition, Wlnnlpegs- py iwo games wun uniiea siaies epi lege teams under American rules. On September 19, the Canadian champions tackle Concordia, Col lege, Moorhead, Minn., alma mater of Coach Bob Fritz, who led the 'Pegs to the first Dominion senior grid title ever brought west. "Dyna mite Eddie" James, a regular last year, is carrying the ball with all his famous abandon and Cliff Roseborough has been the sensa tlon of practice sessions. "Tubber' Kobrinsky, Manitoba Varsity gra duate, and the veteran Arnl Coulter are available for action. The first-string line probably will be the same as last year. The ends are well taken care of by Bud Mar-quardt'and Joe Peiplch0once of 'St. Cloud's Teachers College, 'Minn. Peschel and husky Lou Mogul are the middles and the lrisides are filled by Eddie Kushner, one of Winnipeg's greatest grid products, and Bert OJa, line coach and" erstwhile Minnesota great. Lou Adelman, corpulaht and agey centre, probably will be in the pivot berth again. Lou has seen almost twenty years of senior rugby and still is regarded as one of the game's great centres. If the cham pions have a weakness, it lies In a dearth of line relief. Nevertheless, Qja's brilliant drilling has produced number of husky youngster? whose value may be seen during the long campaign, JUNIOR FOOTBALL The forenoon feature of the La bor Day sports will be the Junior football game between teams re presenting Booth and Borden Street Schools. These matches are always keenly contested, the boys displaying a good knowledge of the game and a splendid playing spirit. In the last two games Borden has won from Booth and the extenders wll lbe out to win the game. The teams are very evenly matched on paper. As this is the only event in the forenoon there should be a good turnout of .spectators. Borden Street School Man; Brown, Scherk; Currle, Fitch, Mc- Loa; Schubert, D. Houston, R.
