The city was foun ded Decause ot its splendid harbor and suitability for ocean traffic When the railway was first opened, a fully equipped quarantine station was erected on Digby Island and ail the plans of the people who originated the railway and terminal were that it should become the headquarters for a regular steamship service to the Orient. -. The movement was killed by the building of the railway from Red Pass to Vancouver and by the opening of the Panama Canal. But since that time there has grown up a very considerable trade between Western Canada and the United Kingdom and so far this has been monopolized by Vancouver. At the Liberal meeting Monday nicht it was sueerested by G. W. Nickerson that an effort be" made to secure a subsidy to induce U. K. steamships to come as far as' Prince Kupert to pick up cargo. This it is expected will be followed up, proper data secured and the member for the district has promised to co-operate and press for this service. Commissioner W. J. Alder in a recent speech mentioned that efforts would be made to secure larger shipments of grain through this port. That also is an important (level opihent in connection with the port. The establishment of more industries would also add to the possibilities of port development. If we make this a year of trade development out of Prince Rupert we shall have done something of a permanent nature toward making the city the important port that she ought to be. 1 GENERAL IMPROVEMENT S.
