W. ("Tommy") Brown Saturday night won the men's open championship at th? Recreational and Physical Educa tion Centre In the first public table tennis tournament ever to be staged in Prince Rupert when he defeated young Gordon Stamford in the final round. The scores were 21-16, 21-16, and 21-14. j Both finalists had the time ofj their lives in the semi-final round. Brown being taken to three close sets by Hiroje Yamanaka, who had previously conquered Philip Edg- cumbe, and Stamford barely nosing out P. E. ("Gene") Scott, a hot favorite, 23-21 and 21-18. Youth was served with a ven geance m the ladles open com petition as 13-year old Delphine Balagno treaded triumphantly over all opposition with the los? of but a single set, scoring a decisive victory against Mrs. J. H. Horton in the final round A trio of tiros took part in this com petition but all acquitted themselves surprisingly well. The "consolation" draws pro vided some really close matche-as well as much mirth to player and spectators alike, youthful Bert O'Neill winning the men'? first round casualty draw, and Miss Frances Cross bringing home the bacon In the ladies' section. LOCALS IN BIG LEAD Canadian Legion and Atlin Win Scorcj Another Decisive Victory Over Knox Hotel and Cowan & Latta Over Premier Saturday In District Hoop Series Looks Like Cinch Grottettes Capture Ladles' Championship by Margin Of One Point Winning the second game of the Northern British Columbia senior championship series with Premier by a score of 47 to 28 Saturday night, Prince Rupert made It. two straight victories with an aggregate point lead to dale of 85 to 51. The Premier team sailed by the Catala last night on its return hom-3 and the locals will Journey north for the second two games of the series at Premier on April 2 and 3. The possession of the Sun Life Cup, championship trophy, for the coming year will be determined on the basis of the best three out of four games or, in the event of a two-all tie In games, on total points. The two decisive victories in the opening games, of course, give Prince Rupert a strangle-hold on the competition. As on Friday night, the locals were again full value for their vic tory Saturday evening. The first string forward line of Sonny Stiles, Eddie Smith and Walter Johnson was too much for the visitors to cope with. At that, Sonny Watson, Al Phillips and Bobby Stewart had a good share of the play and, had they not missed so' many scoring chances, Premier would have made much better showing on the score board. During the latter part of the second half Lome Falconer of Premier and Alex Mitchell of Prince Rupert figured In a collision on the floor as a result of which the former was knocked completely out. The game was held up for several minutes while he was coming to. Dr. J. II. Carson was called out of the crowd and Falconer was unable to finish, the game. Johnny Obuchina taking his place. Capt. Watson of Premier was the only player to be banished for fouls, he being sent out about half a minute before the end of the game. The visitors put up a better game on Saturday than they had on Friday. It was a fast game from start to finish. Half time score was 25 to 16 for Prince Rupert. At one time during the period the score was tied up 14 all. Rupert All Stars turned oh the heat in the second half and held the visitors ' down to ten points while the locals collected 22.
