The main street has been cleared of rough places, stumps and the like, and the wheel tracks are of cedar planks laid lengthwise. Columbians have become accustomed to meet with. I cannot speak too highly of the road system which has developed around Massett in the past decade. The drive out to the North Beach, for one instance, is most beautiful and makes it both easy and pleasant to reach the north shore of the island where for miles the conditions are Just ideal for camping. I went out there with a friend and found myself dls-1 inclined to talk but Just wanted to sit oacK in me car ana annK in me loveliness of the scene along the way. There have been no bush fires. I believe Oraham Id. Is pretty well Immune from that nuisance and oss because of the cool damp climate. In fine weather I would give this road the prize for being the most lovely drive anywhere. The ground is level, as the road runs parallel with the sea coast, and it is fairly straight but not mono tonously straight. It runs through a virgin forest the whole way and, If there is a heavy surf, you hear this as you go, as a gentle sort of roar. The forest makes an 'avenue; through which the sun shimmers down to the green mossy carpet which everywhere Is at the base of the trees. I was so much impressed with the beauty of this drive that I noted the fact in my . diary thus: "Can't describe this but it's worth writing up by someone who can." I think the method of road making they are using here is likely to attract visitors and settlers more and more as times goes on and the outside world gets to know. In the old days New Massett was a rough temporary looking place. There was an hotel; named "St. Ives" and James Martin had Just got his store well started. The rest of the place was sketchy, very. Now you find good buildings and a large proportion of them are painted and have an air of permanence. The bridge over Delkatla Slough is a fine structure and much better than the one I knew In the old days, in Delkatla, too. the houses are more permanent looking. Most of them are finished vided. This is an advantage in a windy week such as the present, when the trailers cannot follow their work, but the wharf might well be supplemented with some iresiaences being established. There th-. The display was a tri-oute. indeed, to the work of the director, David Bell, and his com petent assistants, Laughlan Olllles, Miss Beatrice Berner and Miss Kitty Cameron. It was also a testimonial to the undertaking of the Gyro lub this year In having decided to embark upon the project of supervised direction of playground acti vities. The benefits which the chil dren have derived was most appar- jnt. There was a large and appre ciative audience. The program was ambitious and colorful. One hundred and ten youngsters from tiny tots to adolescents participated with vigor and enthusiasm. Some of the items were exacting and Intricate Indeed, requiring considerable skill. The pyramid building in various classes was as usual, spectacular. Tumbling, .vaulting box exercises and general playground games and activities were displayed. There were also some unusually novel and pretty Items such as' the wooden toldier parade of sixteen girls in attractive costumes, the merry-go- round, rose medley and flower ef fect representing "Gyro Play grounds." Miss Beatrice Berner was accompanist for the evening. At the close of the program, T. N. LePage, chairman of the Boys' Band carnival and the Gyro play ground committee, presented cupsi and other awards to the children of the playgrounds as members of teams which won prizes In games and for personal efficiency. On be half of the children themselves and in appreciation of their ser vices suitable presentations were made to Messrs. Bell and Gillies. There were also presentations to Miss Berner. Miss Cameron and Miss Helen Brown as assistants. Ice cream and candies were distributed among the children by the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
