PAOI TWO DAILY NEWS THE DAILY NEWS. PRINCE RUPERT - BRITISH COLUMBIA Published Every Afternoon, -Except Sunday, by Prince Rupert 'Dally News, Limited, Third Avenue II. F. PULL EN - - - Managing-Editor Advertising and Circulation Telephone 98 News Department Telephone 86 DAILY fcUmON TIME TO A WAXEN Wednesday, Oct, 14, 1936 It was charged at nTcccnt meeting of the Junior'Cham-1 ber of Commerce that the Senior Chamber was nothing like as active as it should be. The membership has dwind led until there are only a Tittle more than naif a hundred in good standing. It is useless to turn back and look for :the reason for the lack -of interest in Chamber of 'Commerce proceedings. What is much more important is to put some life into the dry bones, to rouse the organization to greater activity and to induce the people of the city to give it better support. We are not suggesting that the Chamber has not been doing good work. It has been carrying on what are known as the normal activities of such a body. A mass of detail work has -been done and the secretary has been kept busy almost all the time looking after its affairs quietly and unobtusiyely. What is looked for now is a revival of interest in the affairs of the city, .particularly through its leading organization. Jt has come to light that the Nelson Board of Trade has-a paid -up membership of 170 and yet the population of the city is but little larger than the population of Prince Rupert. If it has a thousand more it is largely due to the efforts -of the Board of Trade in its behalf. As we have pointed out more than once, when the government wants -advice on any important business matter affecting this district, it seeks it through the Chamber of Commerce or Board of Trade, a body which is considered to be representative of the business and professional interests of the city. Every self-respecting businessman should be a member continuously, paying the fee regularly as part of the cost of doing business in the city. For this he expects some definite results. Evidently Prince Rupert is now at the parting of the ways; Either the city must have: a Chamber of Commerce that is a representative bodv or drop it altogether. It is for the business and professional interests of the citv to decide whether thev want such a body or not and whether they are: :ready to -give'it proper Support.lt is time to wake up ana decide.
