In view ol .Prince Rupert's industrial aspirations a few quotations irom Trie iewsprint bulietint issued by the Midwest Newsprint Manuracturers' Association may prove of interest: "The whole of North America, excluding Mexico, manu factured 4,001,000 tons of newsprint last year. IS CLOSE Moose Defeat Grotto to Move Into Tie For First Place I A handful of fans sat In on fairly good Senior and Ladles' League' basketball games last night while the Junior and Intermediate games were a bit one-sided, although the Scythians showed the fans why they are the tops in the Intermediate League. The Grotto, minus three of their regulars, lost to the Moose in a close Senior Basketball League tussle 35 to 32 last night and the standing Is now almost completely tied up. The Grotto took a threj-polnt lead at the Mart or the game but lost it a few minutes later and the Lodgemen were not headed un til the last three minutes when the Grotto were leading 32 to 31. Then Mitchell cinched the game with two baskets before full time. Half time score. was 16 to 13 in favor of the Moose. Intermediate League The Legion went strong for a few minutes then faded out of the picture to lose 17 to 24 to the Scythians in the Intermediate fixture. Half time score was 14 to 11 in favor of the Scythians. It the present increases are long continued a shortage is inevitable. "In 1926 the newsprint mills in the United States actually produced 1,684,000 tons of paper. This figure might be construed as the practical capacity of the industry at that time. Today the potential capacity is less than 1,200,-1 000 tons. Liven in 1929 some mills made no money in newsprint. As demand and price fell there was a constant conversion of machines. Some mills which produced print in 1929 are now completely converted or hopelessly dismantled. Still others are hopelessly insolvent. The practical newsprint capacity of the United States is probably not a quarter rnillion tons greater than the actual produc tion of 1335. "This nieans that if publishers of the United States are to demand much more newsprint they will not get it from the mills of their own country. Canada must meet that demand. "When the rest of the world wishes more newsprint it will turn to the great forests and mills of Canada. In the jiast three years the Dominion has doubled its shipments." overseas PULP DEMAND INCREASING While the proposed local pulp mill is designed to manufacture only high grade pulp for the use of the rayon mills, it is possible that, with newsprint advancing in price and the market expanding, the Prince Rupert mill may expand in the direction of paper making. At any rate, the present industrial outlook is excellent for the establishment of an industry in Prince Rupert, for sulphite pulp is in great demand and the demand is increasing.
