Mackerel Taken on Queen Charlotte Islands. I Official announcement was made jby the Department of Public Works in Ottawa today of the awarding of the contract for alterations and ad dillons to the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve building at Prince Rupert to John Currie & Son of Prince Rupert at a contract figure of $8500. Announcement of the letting of the contract was already made several days ago In the Dally News. Seattle's waterfront was all agog recently when the power schooner President came in with a more than usually salty tale. Captain Thomas L. Thompson was the bearer of the strange tale. "We came in toward Hecate Strait about one o'clock In the morning," he raid. "We had been runnine In heavy fog for about three hours, and It was so dark you couldn't ee a boat length ahead We were rearing land and we stopped to take soundings. I came forward 'rom the wheelhouse as Nels Walt-erg started to cast the lead. The next thing we knew there were bird cries all around us in the :ark and we could hear the rustle of what sounded like a million ngs. The birds were like mosquitoes, there were so many. They eemed to be so tired they could hardly fly. and they settled down an th2 decks and masts and over the wheelhouse. We picked themi op and threw them overboard to make a path back to the wheel- house, cut more settled wheH they had been. They started going down the hatch into the fo'c's'le and the boys b-low threw them out as fast as they came in and finally closed the hatch. They got into uie engine room and the engineer was driving them out of :orners for all the next day. Then hey started laying esies orf ths deck. We got six of the eggs to ring home with us. We lav off the land taking soundings until daylight and the birds sat on the boat all night. They flew away at iawn and we cam on Into Queen Charlotte Sound, homeward bound." Capt. ThomDson believpd the birds were of several varieties of fork-tailed petrel which freauent northern waters. They were about tne size of gulls and the eggs were three quarters of an inch long and pure white. Rev. and Mrs. I,. G.
