One of the best and the easiest grown of all flowers that bloom just now Is the sweet rocket. It ts extremely showy and almost as fragrant as the lilac. Judging from the florist catalogues there are a number of different lilacs and some of them are a great Improvement on the two old-fashioned varieties we have in Prince Rupert the purple and the white. Possibly some of the other varieties would do well in this cli mate. Those who were fortunate en ough to winter their Siberian wall flowers have a nice show In their gardens just now. I had a small bed of seedlings put of doors. The frost seemed to sweep across it diagonally, taking half and leaving the other half. If you cut off the flowers of the golden alyssum now it has. finished blooming. It will soon be ready to bloom again but not as profusely as at first. A soaking of water will help to hasten the second blooin. Those who are growing begonias out of doors should be warned not to let them dry out as they are likely to do If not watered. If they dry out they may not wholly re cover this year. This Is the time of year when gardens are liable to be neglected. Hie weeds are growing and the evaporation is very rapid unless the surface of the soil Is moved at regular intervals. There Is a little hand cultivator that is very useful for this purpose. It costs about a dollar at any hardware store where garden tools are sold. I have noticed inat this vear there are very few slugs compared with the past few seasons but possibly others have . a . different (tale tb?tfeJl5 The onIy annoyance to the gardener this vear sppidr in hnwo been the black files and gnats that become particularly active Just be fore sundown. Jake says he has lived In Prince Rupert for twenty years and he has just learned that June Is the best month in the year. Too bad weather like this should cause floods. It Is said that manv of the firps are caused by heat generated from the mortgage rubbing against the insurance policy. I never could understand why tfie man who gets the girl should be congratulated. I think the man who was lucky enough to escape from the midsummer madness Is the lucky chap. But then the lucky chap Is not usually the one to be envied. When a man has been turned down hard by some other girl, he realizes how much he loves his wife. The bore is one who dilutes a grain of thought with a bushel of words.
