M Science Watches Farm Industry Dr. Hibbert Tells of Continued Search For By-Products EDMONTON, June 10: (CP) Presence of undesirable mineral elements in straw has thwarted efforts of science to use it in naDer- maklng and although the handicap may be overcome shortly by scientists, vastness of Canada's wood- pulp reserve will prevent wide spread use of straw for paper- making, Dr. Harold Hibbert of Mc- Glll University stated in an inter view here. Professor of industrial and cel lulose chemistry for the pulp and paper research branch at McGill. With its head above water it appeared little worried about baptism so early in life. At the annual general meeting of the Reward Mining Company held in Vancouver recently the re port of Ned E. Nelson E.M, consult ing engineer and geologist, states that it is now possible to lay out the work of development of the property in four or five known and promising gold bearing quartz- pyrlte veins. The report says In part: "The map, made up from transit surveys, shows physical conditions as more favorable than I believed them to be. inasmuch as ereater depths on the veins can be obtained with considerably less work in unfavorable ground. The indentation meht scheme "Since first seeing the property in 1932. I have regarded the No. 3 vein or shear zone, as promising. as it appears to be structurally strong. Its known length and width along with the apparent length. since a natural depression seems to mark the continuation of the shear zone, suggests tonnage possi bilities. This depression has its northerly and seaward end at the small Indentation which it is in tended to make into a harbor and on which, right at tide water, the proposed mill will be built. Goine southerly the shear marking de pression passes off the Nabob Claim of the Edye Pass Group. "The total length of the depres sion to be prospected on Edye Pass ground is 1600 feet, and the natural way to develop the shear zone Is by drifting upon It. This proposed adit uiqn becomes the main haulase way of the mine, and from It branches should be run to undercut the showings on numbers 1, 2 and 4 veins. "The distances to be driven and the depths gained by this adit, If started near the head of the bay and at an elevation of 25 feet above high tide, are as follows: 'To known ore In No. 3 shear zone, shown by strike trench, the distance is 925 feet and the deDth obtained 90 feet. The approximate depth at the south line of the Nabob claim 'would be 160 feet and the distance from the portal of the adit 1600 feet. "The 'combined lengths of the main adit and the several laterals Is 2555 feet. (925 plus 550 plus 530 plus 550). "With the camp buildine and equipping going ahead in such an energetic and business-like way, interesting information should soon be forthcoming, and the property headed for the profitable future Us location and promising mineraliza tion bespeak of It." 12-Year Old Boy Edits Newspaper BON ACCORD, Alta., June 10: (CP) Twelve-year old Eddie Ar-rol Is publisher, editor and printer of the Bon Accord Herald. From tepee and native hut mem bers of the Sweet Grass Indian band gathered In council to vote against surrender to the department of Indian affairs gas and oil potentialities found on the reserve by federal geologists last summer. Release of a governmental report Indicating presence of oil and gas last February created a malor flurry in Saskatchewan. Overnight tne provincial department of natural resources was flooded with applications for mining leases. Under terms of the Fort Carle-ton treaty drawn up in 1876 between Queen Victoria and the Cree Indians, the tribe claims "absolute rights of possession on the reserve" said to be the pick of the potential oil field. As guardian, the department seeks a surrender to natural resources rights "for disposition as it sees fit." Chief Seeing: Things Presence of oil and gas on the reserve has been known to the Indians for years. Chief Swimmer says. Its location was revealed to him in a vision, through his "Pow- akum," many moon aso. (The Towakum" Js the nearest literal translation available, meaning "a guardian of spirit dreams ) His tribe, however, is concerned as to whether the treaty will be respected. They seek the rlsht tn sanction or withhold the grantlns of leases a voice,. In, the manage ment oi meir own arfalrs. Those who seek to file applications point to a proviso in the treaty which says "The reserves of any land or interest therein; may be sold or otherwise disposed of by Her Majesty's government ior tne use and benefit of the In dians thereto." But the Indian chieftain, sllen as the hills around him. nnlnt.s to the concluding words of the proviso wnich sets forth "with their consent first had an obtained." On a near horizon an oil derrick is rising to the skvll the white man's land Drilling for oil and gas will soon be under way. Chief Swimmer has eneaeed Ipti counsel and looks forward to the time when his braves may captlal-ize on the benefits with whirh nature may have .endowed them. A. E. He arrived at noon yesterday and will be here until about Sunday. Peculiarly' enough, one of the things that has brought Harry to town this trip is his decision to instal an oil burner In his boat. Apparently, although there is wood, wood everywhere, it Is a little too tough to get It for stove purposes, and Harry thinks oil will be more efficient. As there is not enough room inside for storage he Is thinking of puttins in a hollow steel mast for use as a fuel tank.
