Ethiopia was so situated. In Spain the majority of the planes are in the service of the Fascists. On this coast just now there are practicallv no defences which would amount to anything in time of war. There is a good basis for the .development of naval and military units but the military has no guns and the navy has no boats. j While it is hardly within the-scope of a newspaper to pose as military expert or to suggest what might be done, it seems apparent to everyone that at Prince Rupert there should be a naval base with at Jeast one defence ship sta- wuneu nere, preieraDiy a submarine or a small fleet of; submarines. There should also be a fort with anti-aircraft guns for the protection of the port. Adding to that and most important of all should be a fleet of planes, trained in defensive tactics to co-operate with the navy and military forces in case of attack. Looking across the Pacific today we see what Japan is doing to Chma,( just because China is weak with hardly any defences. Any power might be doing the same to British Columbia, for the coast is undefended. It has been the custom,in the past to make Halifax the centre of military and naval activity. Halifax is close to Great Britain and could quickly -call on the British Navy for help. British Columbia is a long way from Europe and would have to struggle for herself in case of attack by an enemy. It is all very well for Canada to say she has no enemies, dust now there may easily develop a difference with Japan over the fisheries. Other differences may arise in which a defenceless nation has no honft nnwinsf n mili tarized power. The British Navv is doubtless come to our aid but a hostile power would be likely to take advantage of a time when Britain needed every snip ana every man in .Europe. VIMY PICTURES The story of Vimy was told in the Dailv Npwh Inof v0. rung m the report of the address of Norman Watt. It was told again at the Presbyterian Church last night by School Inspector Hall but at the theatre last evening pictures were shown of the actual proceedings and the voice of the King was heard as he addressed those present at the formal opening Those who have heard and read the story of the Vimy ceremony should not fail to see the pictures tonight. The whole program at the theatre tonight is above the average, tlie feature play, '.'Little Lord Fauntleroy" being one thatappeals to old arid young. It is an encouragement to the management to bring good pictures if the people " " "uimucio iu oiiuw uieir appreciation ana enjoy the high class entertainment. Old Country Soccer 3. 4.
