WOMEN LEAD MEN ASTRAY According to the Dominion Bureau of Statistics girls leave the farms and flock to the cities, and some of the men follow while others stay in the country. As there are more than two single men of marriageable age to one '"b v wiiicAAi jiv.jij uii'iii iai il is ymm LllclL men have to go to the cities or be without a mate. That is one of the problems of keeping people on the farms. .Evi-, dently country life will .have to be made attractive to.girlsi if the situation is to be saved. The tragedy of a periodic famine in Chiba once more draws attention to the deplorable condition of that country under which these tragedies occur with unceasing ire-: gularity. So far civilization has done little or nothing to prevent tnem. Millions ot people are left to the vagaries of nature just as the people of Southern Saskatchewan might have been left to starve had it not been for the prompt action of official. and private organizations bringing them supplies. Possibly the building of highways which is now in progress in China will enable the people to respond more quickly with a view to preventing a condition arising such as that reported yesterday. Lake Was Examined at Week-End By Dr. Neal Carter and Party A local delegation of sportsmen and scientists made a thorough examination of Prudhomme Lake at .the week-end and their report will indicate that the lake is very suitable for the planting or trout ?ggs, which It Is understood the department will bring from Kam-loops Lake to be hatched. The party was headed by .Dr. Neal Carter who represented the department of fisheries, L. Blain, T. Fortune and Pete Sunderland. Oh Sunday afternoon they made soundings of the lake which showed its depth to average about fifty feet at the upper end. The middle is so shallow that a log Jam has accumulated there. The deepest place Is .in the middle of the bay where 130 feet was reached near the outlet. In the evening the party around the shore In an Evin- rude propelled boat and explored all the streams for their suitability as spawning beds. Chemical analysis of the water was also taken with the result tt)at everything seems favorable for the purpose suggested. Prudhomme Lake is about half an hour's walk or a little more beyond the present end of the highway. It is.one of a chain which includes Taylor, Cavanagh . and Diana.
