There were, approxi maieiy juu omcers and guests present, uaro: tables were et freely and a general atmoj phere of gaiety prevaded. After the last toast to the King, about midnight, most of the guest3 departed, leaving a number of the htore engrossed card players to their own devices. Among the latter was a group consisting of Col. Ogllvle, the Earl Allsa, Capt. Howard, of the Navy, and the Prince's A. D. C. Montague. They ivere seated In an alcove between the first and second lawns. All were wealthy and, al- tnougn the stakes were high seemed quite unconcerned and gay Challenge Made As the game progressed, how ever, the play grew tense, nerves were on edge and suspicion ram pant. Suddenly an argument start ed.. between Ogllvle and Howard, rurning quickly to a quarrel. A challenge was given and accepted; the point "was to be settled by combat. The quartet proceeded to the outpost guardroom where rapiers were sorrowed1 from Major Richard and from there went to the second lawn where the duel was to be held, Montague and Earl Allsa acting as seconds. The duel was fierce and bloody, both Ogllvle and 'Howard being expert swordsnfn, and for some time neither had the advantage though both were" receiving seveit! wounds. Suddenly Howard saw an open ing In his opponents guard, lunged, and Ogllvle fell dead to the ground In a wealter of blood. Captain Howard's victory, however, was gained only at a great price. Mortally wounded In the duel, he died soon after he had killed his adversary. The duel created a great stir at the time, and the Duke of Kent refused to allow Col. Ogllvle to be burled with military honors.
